Os the 356 is a rimmed cartridge? Thats the beauty (and advantage) imo over the no neck 35 whelen in a handi rifle

Gendoc,
Within it's realm, the .356/.358 Win kills all outta proportion from what it looks like it could do. Kinda like a Superformance .357 Maxi! ;D

i know that some people do not like a rimless cartridge. thats there option.....

i myself kinda like the performance from both rim and rimless. i can make'um shoot

Any case with a deep angled base/extractor cut and its rim diameter the same as its base diameter, is considered a rimless case. The 308 and 30-06 class of cases are rimless cases.

A case where its rim is slightly larger than its base diameters is considered SEMI rimless case. IE 32, 380 and 38 Super cases as well as the 444 Marlin are examples as SEMI rimmed.

A rimmed case has a larger substantially larger rim then the dia of the base of the case. IE a 257 Mag max 30-30 and its "class of calibers are all rimmed cases.

So it could be argued that the 307/356 are a semi rimmed case. BUT that rim is fairly substantial and specifically there to head space off of. SO based on this many (self included) consider this a rimmed case.

The deal with the 356 is multi faceted, first off, yes its a rimmed case. The problems with the 35 Rem and 35 Whelen are the same, poor and inconsistent head-spacing off the little shoulder of these cases. the shoulder of the 356 is no better, BUT it head spaces off its rim, eliminating this problem.
Secondly like most 35's its efficiency far out runs what it appears to be able to do on paper. Its fully capable of vel with in 10 + - % of its parent the 358. The 358 is better than 2600 from a 200g bullet.

Lastly, yea its cool, not to many people have one and it will nearly duplicate the 358. A damn good caliber to copy!  ::)

The .356 Winchester is a semi-rimmed, bottle necked, centerfire rifle cartridge which was intended for use in lever action rifles. It was developed concurrently with the .307 Winchester which acted as the parent cartridge. Both cartridges were introduced in 1982 in the then new Model 94 XTR lever action rifle.
The .356 Winchester was developed using the case similar to that of the .308 winchester but which featured a semi-rimmed design so as to operate through a lever action rifle. Hence the .358 Winchester, which is essentially .308 Winchester necked up to accept a .358 in (9.1 mm) bullet is very similar to that of the .356 Winchester, the difference being the design of the rim.
Performance of the .356 Winchester is close to that of the .358 Winchester giving up only 50–100 ft/s (15–30 m/s) with any bullet weight. However, the .356 has a slightly less case capacity that the .358 winchester due to its thicker brass case. Furthermore, heavier bullet will need to be seated more deeply that in the .358 Winchester as the cartridge has to function reliably through a a lever rifles feeding mechanism. For these reasons the factory 250 gr (16 g) bullet looses about 90 ft/s (27 m/s) to the .358 Winchester while the 200 gr (13 g) factory load is only 30 ft/s (9.1 m/s) slower.
The Marlin Model 336ER was offered in .356 Winchester for several years, but was discontinued in 1987. The same year, Winchester ceased production of their Model 94s chambered for .356 Winchester. It was brought back immediately in 1988, but was again discontinued in the mid-1990s.
Despite its nomenclature, the .356 Winchester actually uses a .358 caliber bullet. Olin engineers who developed the .356 Winchester advise against loading it with round-nose bullets.

ain't got no clue why that happened :o

I read it fine! In summary, the .356 Win is just short of being the ultimate cartridge for 99% of the US hunting population. ;D  BTW, I have found that with a single-shot rifle, load length is less critical and you can get nearly the same velocities with most bullets if they are seated slightly longer than SAAMI spec. That's why I had mine throated for a 225gr bullet, it's a tad bit longer.

Thanks, Dinny

Doc,

I think your post on the 356 cured my astigmatism. ;D
I think the 356 vs 35W is kinda like the 7.62x39 versus all da other .308s; folks just like what they like.
