Interesting Bullet performance on an Axis
« on: December 30, 2011, 01:20:31 PM »
I shot an Axis doe at my place Tuesday morning.  She was about 50 yds away, quartered hard towards me. I was using my Rem 700 30-06 with Remington Core Lokt 165 gr.  This has been a good combo for whitetail, hogs, and my Sika this season.  At the shot she jumped and ran 30 yds before dropping.  What is interesting is that the bullet did not exit.  It entered left shoulder and was under the skin on the right hip.  Take a look.

The second isn't a great pic, but the jacket is folded back over the core and the base of the bullet can (or could) be clearly seen.  I haven't weighed it, but I don't think much has been lost. Other than no exit, I believe it performed well.

Corelokts are very underrated. Who needs premium bullets.

Cheese,  in my 30-06 and my wifes 243. core lokts is all we use. What is the saying, the deadliest mushroom in the woods?

Switched to Hornady leverevolution in my 35 Rem, when I began to use them in my Contender of the same caliber. This bullet did at least mushroom, whereas the Hornady bullet I posted a pic of that went through a coyote tail to chest at 60 yds running away did not expand at all. Doc, you are right, you just never know. Play the odds of consistency I guess.

Specifically to the 35 Rem I've used Factory 200 gr. Rem's and both of the WW loads when they still made the original ST bullet.
All of them performed as they were supposed to.
Once I started reloading that cartridge I settle on the 220 gr Speer.
What is the point of Life if you can't have fun.

Did the same exact thing this year with my 30-06 using the 150gr Speer Mag Tip.  Frontal shot at 54 yards on an average sized Whitetail
button buck.  DRT.   Stopped in the left hindquarter after breaking large leg bone coming down from the pelvis.  Weighed 106gr and expaned to .565" in diameter.  Stopped expanding at the cannelure and jacket peeled back against the shank.  Done the very same thing
with Hornady and Core-lokts in the past.

I have used the 30-06 165gr core-lokts for years on whitetail and hogs. I can not remember ever recovering one.
