BH209 questions...
« on: December 31, 2011, 01:08:42 AM »
I have read this, but cannot seem to find it...

I have been shooting 777 pellets form my side kick with good accuracy. BUT I have run out and would like to look at "cleaner" offerings. In my Sidekick I have a 25ACP breech plug. I would also like to switch to a full bore 50Cal slug. I cast my own 385 GP bullet and would LOVE to use that...

I know I need a granulated powder for full bore slugs, but is the 25ACP working with the big horn? I do have plenty of Pyrodex in granulated too, but am interested in the BH 209.

CW,

I have tested BH209 to both ends of the limits, IME the .25 ACP does not reliably ignite BH209 without some type of delayed fire or hang fire. I have tested this with the PR .25 ACP breech plug, with Small Rifle Primers, and Small Rifle Magnum Primers. Of course the SRMP does work better, and sometimes gives instant ignition, but is not 100% reliable for instant ignition. I have never had a misfire, but you can actually hear the hammer drop before the main charge ignites. This delayed action increases as the temperature decreases. Our muzzeloader season is in December, so there is no way I would trust the .25 ACP ignition for hunting. There is an alternative that does work 100% igniting BH209 with any 209 primer you wish to use. I would imagine you already know what that is?

The CCI magnum primer comes highly recommend for Blackhorn 209, and gives good results and solid ignition.

Started using BH209 for deer this year in my Sidekick.  All I can say is AWESOME!  Shot at three, brought three home.  BUT I am using the unmentionable  breechplug.  The flash hole may be too small on your 25 ACP setup.  I think it needs to be a minimum of .035" to work.  I know some Encore users have to drill out their flash hole for BH to work. I am not familiar with the 25 setup at all so don't really know what the problem might be.  But I do know it is too good of a powder to give up on w/o some experimentation.  Others might chime in with way more experience than I have.
This is the day the Lord has made.  I choose to rejoice and be glad in it.

I had the 25acp breechplug on my Encore already when I switched to BH209. Could not get instantaneous ignition no matter what primer I tried. I drilled the flash hole to .035 and although a little better, it was still unsatisfactory. I went back to standard plug drilled to .035 and W209 primers. Finally, instant ignition that seems as quick as my 30-06.

Busta,
Does the large rifle vari-flame work in the unmentionable breech plug and will this setup reliably ignite Blackhorn even in cold weather of hunting season - I only ask b/c I think I am getting some accuracy issues in my Huntsman due to the 209 primer pushing the bullet before complete ignition as described by many as an issue with the 209 ignition system.  I have finally used up all my Pyrodex and considering switching to the BH209 based upon reading some of your posts on it.  Thanks
Edit:  Is the vari-flame the same dimensions as a 209 primer is what I am asking in line 1 above.

In your Huntsman or Sidekick you can use your factory plug with a large rifle mag primmer. If you look up my plastic primmer carrier alternative it will explain how and drill the flash hole to .040, It works like a million bucks.

i have the same question unmentionable breech plug ? i use 209 powder started out with fed 209 primers but was watching the .30 hole close up after 10 shots . switched to the large rifle primer holers by pr and have no issues i can post 2 3 shot gtoups at a hundred .. u have to realy look 2 bullets in one hole with pr bullets. i was going to use 22hornet shortend brass with smrp .. but wasnt sure about the smrp igniting the 209 even a magnum was told difference bet large and small was just the diameter?

Well I am still playing with this.. I have about 5 pounds of pyrodex, so I really should be using that before buying more. ::)

BUT I have acquired a T/C Maxi ball mold AND 10 boxes of factory 350 Maxi HUNTERS... I also still have that 385g mold.  I have four muzzle loaders, the oldest is a Renegade that clover leafs maxis with 80g pyrodex RS. A 54 Lyman Great Plains thet shoots balls very well with 110G of Pyrodex. Mt Knight Predator thats extreamly accurate with almost anything I have shot thru it ACCEPT my 385 GPB... Lastly my Side kick. Luckly it too has been very accurate nearly as good as the T/C with a couple loads. But its favorite (Both in accuracy & preformance on deer) Is a Traditions full bore copper washed projectile of 300+ grains and 100g of 777 powder pellets.

I have not really wrung these out as I want to...  Thank you very much for the tips!

Can some one PM me the one who shall not be named...name? I think I know but i thought that was cleared up...

MAN - GA,

The Large Rifle Primer Vari-Flame is reletively new. Cecil did not have that available back in 2008 when I was testing Blackhorn 209. I am sure it would work, especially with LRMP's, but I have no experience. At this time I have not intentions of testing the Large Rifle Vari-Flame, as I have no issues with accuracy using 209 primers.

If you use an o-ring with that breech plug, you can use reduced power 209 primers. I have tested at least a dozen 209 primers, from 209-4 (410 Primers), through all the low power muzzleloader primers, to the CCI 209M and Federal 209A. Never a hiccup!

Yes, the Vari-Flame is the same size as a 209 primer. The LRMP is actually quite a bit hotter than a 209 primer, and I hear it will ignite Blackhorn 209.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I also had unreliable ignition with the 25ACP setup and BH209. I drilled out my flash hole to .035 and use Winchester 209 primers. Instant ignition even below 20 degrees.

One other question - will a 209 in a Knight "red disk" light the Blackhorn reliably - if I switch I want the Huntsman and Knight on the same powder if at all possible

If this is a DISC Extreme or Elite, then Yes, the Red Full Plastic Jacket will work, as long as you use a good strong 209 primer, such as a Federal 209A or CCI 209M (Magnum Primer). Use a new FPJ for every shot, for best results.

If this is a Plunger Type rifle such as the MK-85, BK-92, LK-93, Wolverine, Bighorn, with the Red FPJ Conversion, then I would not recommend shooting Blackhorn 209. It can be unsafe it these type rifles, unless charges are kept down away from max.

Blackhorn 209 works best in actions that lock up, such as locking bolt actions, drop block, and tip up (break open) style rifles where the primer cannot move away from the primer pocket/breech plug.

Blackhorn 209 is not reliable in the orange primer carriers for the Huntsman, you need an aftermarket or custom breech plug for best results.

This is from BH209 web site. I would not recommend using 25ACP breech plugs.

Blackhorn 209 is designed to work with standard 209 shotshell primers. For the best results, we recommend the following brands:

  • CCI 209M
  • Federal 209A
We DO NOT recommend any of the 209 primers designated for muzzleloaders (Winchester Triple 7, CCI MZL, Federal Fusion, or Remington Kleanbore). These primers are all weaker than standard shotshell 209 primers and do not provide adequate ignition for Blackhorn 209 – especially when used in a poorly designed breech plug system. We also DO NOT recommend #11 percussion caps, musket caps, high-powered rifle or pistol primers.

I have converted all 3 of my Knights to use the bare primer. It requires a new breech plug but its well worth the expense. Almost no blow back and no hang fires with CCI 209M primers BH 209 powder
