Hi All,
 
Took 4 handis to the range yesterday and my 45-70 Shorty won in a landslide.  A month or so ago Swampman posted about a load of 12.5 grains of Unique and IIRC a 405 grain bullet.  I decided to try this load, but filled the powder measure on my Dillon 550 w/o first installing the large powder bar, so the max drop I could get was 11.9 grains of Unique.  Being lazy I ran with the 11.9 grain charge.  I loaded 50 Lee 405 grain HBs with the Unique, Starline brass, no crimp, loaded into the rifling, and off to the range I go.  Sighted in with a new 4x simmons shotgun scope and put the last two bullets in the same hole @ 50 yards.  Moved to 100 yards and shot a 1" group with the two holes touching.  I then proceeded to bust a dozen clay pidgeons at 100 yards, one right after another.  No barrel heating issues as this is a very slow round, probably just over 1000 FPS with the 18.5" barrel.  The light recoil allowed me to see the bullets hit the clay pidgeons at 100 yards. ;D   Then the rain picked up and I packed in a hurry and left my targets and stand at the range. :P 
 
This was the best range day this homemade shorty has ever had, I think I will not bother looking for a better load.

 I am trying to work up the nerve to cut mine but I may be ordering one of the trapper barrels for my bday present fitted to one of my other frames,

It is not that big a project to chop a barrel.  Just leave it a little long in case you need to recut and recrown it.  The first one I chopped it took me a long time to get the nerve to do it.  Now I have to talk myself out of turning all my Handis into Shorties.  Would be kinda fun to go to the range with a 16.1" 45-120.  Can you say "grass fire"? :o

Not to jump the thread, but how do you get the barrel sawed off straight with a hack saw. Sawed a shotgun barrel off years ago with a hacksaw and it wasn't very good job. Just hate to mess a barrel up again. Thinking of sawing one off, but at the moment have scared feet!!! Zeak

Tom, as a retired electrician, I have cut more conduit with a hacksaw than I care to remember, both metal and plastic.  I almost NEVER got a square cut.  No thank you.  I wouldn't attempt to cut a rifle barrel with a hacksaw, and that's only half the job.  You still need a crown.

You don't cut it square with the hacksaw.  I cut it a little long and as square as I can and then square it up with a file.  Even on a barrel with a small bore it doesn't take that long to do it, usually 15 to 45 minutes and the whole job is done.  The crown is also down by hand with rotary stones and/or a stove/carriage bolt (w/lapping compound) with a smooth head.  On the the last shotgun barrel i cut down I squared it up with a 1" tabled mounted belt sander, probably wouldn't try that method on a rifle barrel.  I just make sure I leave long enough to stay legal in case I have to hire professional help to fix the barrel. :-[

Zeak,any basic 'machinist manual (library or maybe even online now) will tell how to use properly use a hacksaw; the problem is that we grow up thinking that you just have at it and 'hack' something off. Just like any machining operation, the stock (barrel in this case) must be nicely marked (at least use masking tape and put a strong line on that all around), jigged up straight and square, in a solid bench vise at the right level to your elbows, use a new fine cut blade (properly mounted and tensioned in the, hopefully, heavy duty, not cheapie $1.99 special bin, frame) and you only cut on the forward stroke, letting the blade teeth do the work, not your speed or pressure. If you do this in a 'workman' manner you can make a surprising straight cut and have little to have to square up with a file.
BTW, whenever we mention using a rotary stone to crown with, I sure wish we would make the point that it is used by hand only, NEVER with powertools.
Once I got my HD frame I was amazed at what a difference it made, but even with a lesser tool, if you always strive to make the best cut possible, you will get better at it.
