I need just a few .452 bullets, 500 grs or bigger..
« on: January 17, 2004, 03:27:41 PM »
These are for a little project I want to experiment with. I would sure appreciate a little help. I don't really need a large quantity, and can't see spending a lot of money for 100. Man that would be a lot of wasted lead. I would be glad to pay what they are worth and shipping.

Don't think anyone makes a .452" mold to cast that heavy Robert. You can size down a .458" bullet of that weight but it has been my experience when you do you seldom have enough lube capacity for it. I can't imagine a .452" bore barrel with a twist rate to handle such a heavy bullet either. Wanna tell us about this project?

I could probably size a few 458's

This is for an experiment with a very light load.  I don't want to scare anyone, but I have been tinkering with this 450 MONGO idea.  Blowing out 444 brass to fit 45-410 chambers to eliminate the extreme free-bore.  I got to thinking....what about sticking with the 45 Long Colt and using a long bullet with light loads?  Like a BIG Aguila SSS.  ....I know...crazy huh?

Wal maybe a touch on the strange side Robert but I guess we're all a bit that way aren't we.  :)

I'll take a look and see what I might have laying around. I know I had a bunch of bullets cast up for the .45-70 but sold it. I should still have some I think that haven't been melted back down. If I find them I'll let you know and would ship them to you for reimbursement of shipping costs only. If I locate some what quantity you think will do?

I could probably use a dozen or so, more-less... whatever,  If I dont use them I can just throw them in the pot.  G.B.  I guess I could try the ones you have, I am not sure of the length, but I can trim brass to make just about anything work.  Besides mailing, I would gladly chip in material cost.  I am not in any hurry, when you get around to it you could E-mail me or P.M. with an amount and I'll send a Postal M.O.  Thanks again guys.

Robert, I just went and looked and don't seem to find them. Will look again later. I had four different bullets from about 480 to 525 grains cast up and sized at .458". I thought I knew where they were. Makes me wonder now if I've already melted them back down. Don't think so but hey I've got CRS in the worst way. If I find them I'll let you know. Can you size to .452" if I find them?

Robert, In the 45colt be VERY carefull with what powders you choose even for what may be light loads. a bullet of that weight is gonna EAT some case capacity and what may seem like a small charge could take things off the scale when lit in a big hurry. Not to mention the case bulge with that bullet even seated long. I have an LBT 452/365 WLN and would be happy to cast some up if you need them? Have fun with your project and be carefull.

Just visiting from the swaging board. There may be one of us swagers that could make a 500+ grain .452cal all lead (soft) bullet for your tests. You could try asking. However most pistol caliber swage sets, even though very versatile in the 'weight area', are designed to produce  bullets only over the range that are practical for that caliber. Unfortunately I am snowbirding this month and away from my shop. So I can't give any direct help. 8)

now i am thinking. :)
if you take one of the heavy 45-70 bullets and size it down to .452 this may work well in  sabots for muzzle loader.

That's great.  I might have to try them in my smokepole too.  I have the sabots already.

I don't think your sabots are going to be long enough to adaquately support a 500+ grain bullet???

Do you have  ANY IDEA what you have done to me?  Now I am gonna have to go get another gun...just to shoot these bullets..
Those are some awfully pretty bullets.  I thought my 58 Minnie balls were awesome, but these are a whole new world.
I realy liked your card.  I am gonna show it to my minister Sunday.  He will love it.  We have meetings in his house.  The piano is on one side of the room.  The pulpit and the gun cabinet are on the other side.

Robert:

Glad you enjoyed the card. I'm a minister of the Word. We take appointments at any Church who'll have us. We also do radio once a week. Have your Pastor feel free to contact us at anytime.

We haven't shot the 500 gr. FN much but the DC 458-490-RN-GC has been very accurate in our rifles. I size mine to .460 mostly and the one we sent you are sized the same. This bullet seems to work fine at most any velocity.
