Your favotite squirrle getter........
« on: January 02, 2012, 01:08:43 AM »
Here in SC. deer season just ended yesterday.

Now its time to start chasing the little bushy tails. I will be using a S&W 617 w/4"bbl or m63 w/5'bbl.

Whats your favorite??

I can't really name "My Favorite". It depends on the area I'm hunting and my mood that day. However, here are some of my favorites, all of which have been used quite a bit for squirrel hunting:

A T/C Contender in .45 / 410:

A T/C AA Contender in .22 LR, 4X Leupold:

A FA 97 .22 LR, 2X Leupold:

A FA 252 .22 LR, 4X leupold:

A Ruger Single Six .22 LR / .22 Mag convertible, 2X Leupold:

Some Ruger Mark II semi-autos. The most used one is the Standard Model with the 2X Leupold:

Finally, the Contender on the bottom with the SSK Khrome and custom Gordon Logan rib is a .22 LR with a 2X Leupold. I was too lazy to take another picture showing it alone:

The squirrel season in N.C. where I live, runs from mid October through February, so there can be plenty of opportunity to hunt them.

Like Mr.ONiell, it would be hard to just pick one. What I carry usually depends on several things like type woods, weather , mood,  etc . Gun could be a Ruger Single Six or Mk 1 or 2, Taurus Tracker, Contender, High Standard, Smith, etc. Usually it will be a handgun with a scope, weather and light has to be good for open sights now. Sometimes  2 handguns go, one scoped, other open sights. When they are out playing a chipmunk is more fun with a handgun to me than the squirrel, smaller target, don't have to clean it.

Well here in tow in my attic "Squirrel Heaven" i use my Crossman Storm XT .177 cal pellet springer. One clean head shot with that is all it takes. But out in the woods I like my H&R 949 9 shot .22 revolver. Always does the trick when my rear sights dont slide out lol.

The first 2 pics are from my 949, the third pic is my 949 holster, the fourth pic is my Storm XT, and the last pic is the pellets in there before and after state when shot into fabric at 10 feet.

Like Ken, it depended on when (and so what I had at the time to choose from), where based on habitat and the most common shots, and whim.   So what was a "favorite" sometimes was not others.   Only have 3 rimfire handguns left to choose from now... the HD Military would be first choice, then the OM Super Bearcat and last the OM Single Six 22MAG.   Have used a lot of other rimfire handguns for squirrels, but can't say any of them were favorites.

Don't have pictures of all of these, so found some PD on-line of some of the rimfire handguns I have used for squirrels.

High Standard HD Military 6 7/8" 22LR from the mid 50's when I got it from my grandfather.   Still almost as good as new.

Colt New Frontier Buntline 7 1/2" 22LR/22MAG I bought new that was my go to from the early 70's to early 90's, but I seldom used the 22MAG cylinder.  Had custom stag, ebony and rosewood grips and a custom rig made for it.

Bullberry Contender 22LR Match w/Leupold 4X scope from the 90's that Fred built to my specs.

Bullberry Contender 17HM2 w/Burris 7X Target Scope from mid 00's.

AMT Lightning 12 1/2" 22LR in the mid 80's.  Was a lot of fun but a PITA to carry.

Colt Ace Service Model Post War Issue 22LR in the 80's and 90's.   I really loved this gun and was surprized how accurate it was.   Sold it to a gent in Moscow (yep, the red one).

Astra Cub 22 Short in the 60's when it was all I had with me at that time while in the Navy.   It had custom ivory grips on it when I bought it from my auto mechanic for $25.   Did OK on squirrels if I could stalk close enough, but was better on the cottontails always in my yard (and the neighbors paid it no mind).

For me half the fun is playing with them trying to decide what to use. But I always end up back with a revolver. ;D

I am a blackpowder fanatic so this is my choice.
10 grains of triple7 and a 00 buckshot pellet is what it takes.
It is challenging to say the least.  I also use a Browning Buckmark,
a Ruger Single six and an H&R "Fourty Niner". I must admit that I normally have a rifle
of some sort and the handguns are for close targets of opportunity though.
I seldom hunt with just a handgun for small game. annoys me when I see one in the treetops
or across a creek bottom out of range.

Used to hunt them with shotgun, too easy, done in twenty minutes. Then went to the 22 rifle, done in 45 minutes. Started using 22 pistols and thought I had my tool for the job, done in a couple hours. However I was talking to a guy one day and he got me hooked on a different method, uglying them to death, takes considerable time but is worth the effort.
Here's how it works. You sneak up as close as you dare and when close enough, make the ugliest face that you can and the squirrel will die from the peril. Now here is the catcher, my wife wanted to go hunting with me and I taught her how to do it. She was getting really good at it too but as time went by had to make her quit. She started tearing them up too bad.

If I were after squirles for dinner, then I would definatley use a .22 rifle. But I use iron sights on my reveolers and get more practice than squirles. When I do get a couple, I give them to an old man who lives down the road from me. In fact I give several of the older people around here catfish, wild hog meat, ducks, squirles, wild turkey coon ect. They really appreciate it, and I usally get to hear a few good stories about when they were able to hunt. And that plenty of payment for me.

I generally never give away any deer meat, thats for me.............

Interesting old H&R.  I've shot at squirrels with my H&R 929, which appears to be very similar, but don't think I ever got one with it.  Now I like to use my 6" GP100 shooting low-powered wad cutters.  Always careful to shoot only at squirrels with a tree trunk or large limb behind them.

In a handgun it is my K22; but I really prefer either my scoped 10-22 or CZ452.

Ratdog,
Here's a couple more H&R's that would make good squirrel guns.

Model 686 12" convertible

Model 686 10"

Model 676 12"

From a rest, these are all GREAT shooters. Free hand, not so much, just too muzzle haevy.
