Locating glands
« on: January 17, 2004, 05:36:55 PM »
I'm having a hard time trying to locate the anal glands on fox and coyote. Can anyone tell me exactly what they look like and exactly where they are located? If anyone has any pictures that would be great. Thanks a lot, Worm.

The anal glands appear as small sacks on each side of the anus.  They actually are ducted to the anus.  To collect them, most lure makers I've talked with / read take the entire anus and a inch or three of the colon. An aside, I collect all the bladder uriine from my cats and save the bladders along with the anal glands...smells just about right to me

If you have ever noticed, on a domestic dog the anal glands can "back up" an the anus appears to be swollen.  To remedy this situation you "manually" expel the glands.  With thumb and fore finger, one on each side of the anus at 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock, you squeeze and rotate your fingers upward.  Be careful sometimes the "juice squirts 3 or 4 feet ...and it don't smell good, well to me anyhow.

On a caught critter, most times they have evacuated their anal glands when caught, during their stay at the set location (all the stink) and as you approach.  On coyotes, I've never seen anal glands much bigger than a navy bean and about that shape.

Now that you know where they are I'm certain that you will begin to recognize them.  Hope this helps!

Wackyquacker, I have been taking the anus and about 2 or 3 inches of the intestine. Figured I would be better off doing it that way since I wasn't sure exactly what I was doing. I have done this on all the canines I have caught so far (3 coyotes and 5 red fox) and have been labeling them accordingly. Should I let them rot down or should I try to perserve them? I have been experimenting making my own lures and baits for the last few years and am pretty much hit and miss on the good stuff. The ranker the better seems to be the rule for late season fur. Have had the best luck with tainted mink, mink urine and a little fish oil. Caught coyotes on this mixture, backed up with a shot of coyote urine above set. Could be the urine alone is responsible, but I like to think they like my homemade lure/bait. Thanks for the information and look forward to hearing from anyone else that has any information they want to share. Worm

Wacky, I'm never in a hurry anymore, unless its to sit down. I have a lot of books and if I wasn't so lazy I would start looking through them and finding out what I need to know. Season is winding down for me and am only targeting beaver and rats so I will have a little more time to study some of the books I have. I will check back and see if anyone else has posted. You would think with the cost of an ounce of lure that there would be more information on the subject. Talk to you later, Worm.

Boy Worm you have opened a can of worms  :-D !  There are alot of books out there on making lure and  if you dont have a mentor or go slow you can spend alot of money and ruin ingrediants if not done right.... Im not trying to  say dont do it but  take it slow and  read alot plus ask questions.  Russ Carman has a good book on lures and Nick Wyshinski also..

Hey RdFx, I didn't ask about a can of worms, but someone did tell me that a can of rotten worms was good skunk lure. Basically I have been making canine bait in different stages of taint. Some work, some don't. I like to use as much of the critters I catch as I can. I'm also curious about the location of muskrat glands. I guess I'm just to curious for my own good. I look forward to any information I receive. Worm

Worm did you get  or order  a lure book by RUss  Carmen or Nick Wyshinski??????  This will help you eliminate mistakes and get you on right track..... Rat glands are on  a male rats stomach just ahead of its testicals ... Testicals are inside stomach but glands are on outside of stomach... Looks like a minature bvr oil gland.

It sure wasn't WQ. But I just couldn't pass that one up. You being a trapper and all , you should know better than to bait yourself like that. You musta still had some of that lure left on ya and not thinking straight.
But I promise, I will never do it again. Wouldn't want any hard feelings on this trapping page, tomany good guys!!
