You can use this calculator to see how well it may work, or just shoot it, depends on the bullet length and velocity as well as the bullet diameter when it comes to the 44mag, usually .432" or bigger cast bullets get the best results due to the SAAMI rifle specs which are different from pistol specs.

Looks like they have to go about 1500fps to be stable.

300 grain Hornady XTP's do fine from my Handi, I cannot imagine a 310 grain being unable to stabalize.  I like 325 grain in my Super Redhawk so if your Handi does not like em' I am sure you can use them in a hand gun or find someone who will.

I believe the handguns have faster twist barrels.  I'm going to try them over a dose of Unique suggested by John Taffin.

handguns do seem to have a faster rate of twist


please post the load(s) tried and the results.  My load manuals do list unique as an option with heavy lead bullets, but the top loads using unique only reach 1,000 to 1,200 fps (Lyman listed a 275 grain cast at about 1,385 from a rifle)


It would be interesting if a light load with a heavy bullet could be made.

Hodgdon lists H110/300gr jacketed at 1473fps in their 20" 1:38" barrel.

I would say its should be just fine Swamp. But cannot say with absolute certainty as I don't have a 44 mag handi!  :o
 
BUT I do shoot 325's thru my 45 Colt. (Now a 454)  and it shoots just fine!

I think you'd have to get it movin' at a pretty good clip to stabilize with the 38 twist. It'd be nice if Big Green would make 'em with a 20 twist for the heavy stuff.

Don't own a 44 Handi but I once owned a Winchester 94 in 44 mag. With pistol powders in the longer tube I got better results from the slower burners like H110 and W296. Unique did OK with the lighter jacketed bullets between 180 and 200 grs.
 Let us know how the Unique works out with the cast heavies? At the time I was told by some to avoid that combo due to leading. I listened to them....so now I don't know.

I am shooting a 310 grain lead bullet.   It shoots just fine in my older 44 handi.I think I have it sized 431 and it was shooting around 2 inches at 100 yds.  I looked up my load and its 21 grs of H-110.  You need to work up to make sure that will work in your gun.
