Is H&R still replacing 35 whelen barrels?
« on: January 03, 2012, 01:18:09 PM »
Hi guys im a newcomer to this site. I was pointed here after buying a 35 whelen handi last year and experienced the misfire problem. The gun was bought new, it sat on the shelf of gun store for at least 2 years that I know of before i purchased it. Does anyone know if they are still honoring the barrel replacement? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

WELCOME Bucco921!!

You have a new gun, regardless of how long a dealer had it, its never been "owned" so your the first making that a new gun and warranties would begin at the time of purchase.

John is right everything you could need and want to know is in the stickies. So give 'em a read and post back here with any questions or clarifications!

In short, I am sure Remington will make it right for ya!

Forgive my ignorance but what/where is the SKU # ? According to the serial number info in the sticky my gun was manufactured in 06.

Welcome! H&R doesn't replace barrels unless there's a problem, the service notice is related to the transfer bar on 2008 and later Whelens, your 2006 should be fine, mine works perfect, if not, they'll fix it.  ;) You can always call and ask em if the service notice applies to it, they'll need the frame serial number, toll free (866)776-9292.

Thanks guys, I know my guns serial numbers say there shouldnt be a problem but the first box of ammo( remington core loct 250 gr) misfired 16 out of 20. I switched to federal 225 gr and havent had an issue yet. I didnt think anything but the ammo was bad, until someone told me to look it up on here because it was a well known problem with the whelen. This wasnt my first misfire experience with remington ammo so hopefully thats all it was.

Remington brass is very soft and quite often switching to another brand, otr loading "work hardened" brass fixes the problem.

I would still listen to Tim and return it to the factory as outlined in the FAQ's.

Good luck,

I used to have problems with FTF with factory Rem ammo. at least 2 a box. So I made some out of '06 brass and had no FTFs if you reload all our fired rounds will work fine or get a friend with a bolt gun to make out some once fired.

I recently had a box of Rem CL 30-30 that had 5 of 20 FTF. Not impressed. Also had a box of 9mm UMC that looked like a fireworks display after  every shot (all 50). The burning powder looked like a bottle rocket coming from the barrel. Still not impressed. Overheard a customer at Wally world complaining about his Rem CL giving him 50% FTF, but didn't catch the caliber.  It sounds  like a pattern to me and a good reason to stick with something more dependable.

This is just one of the reasons I reload, or handload as I prefer to call it.  I have never built a single round that failed to fire in over 20 years of loading my own ammo.  :)

the sku (order) # is located on the original box end flap. it might have been on the purchase
receipt, depends on tha place of where you got it ;)

fwiw.... back before the recall, i know of a couple professional handloaders that encoutered this "mis-fire" problem. it was not because of the cartridges... it was the transfer bar as tim noted !!!  so it really don't matter how good one handloads, it would have happened
 anyway ;D
i hope you have good luck because they are fine shooters 8)

John,
You are correct, H&R did have a problem with the disconnectors. But when you have a gun that will shoot one kind of ammo, but not another...its  a good chance that ammo is the problem... Just sayin'  :o ::) ::)

If any of you have bought Remington Brass, the necks are almost always all dented up. many times the shoulders and bodies too. It dosen't hurt anything and if it dosen't come out in the sizer die perfect, its after firing. That firing seems to almost imeadiately "firm up" the brass. But open a Winchester or Federal brass and its sharp shouldered round and near perfect. It's called "work hardening" and it can result in split necks after many firings. Annealing will soften it up, but eventually its time to scrap the brass. Lo pressure rounds last the longest and hi pressure the shortest.
