Colt .22 RF Conversion Kit
« on: January 03, 2012, 02:13:51 PM »
I have a Colt '71 series that has been converted to .38 Super. When I bought it (online) a Colt .22 RF conversion kit came with it.  My question is: I have a chance to buy a Colt '81 series and I am wondering if my .22 RF kit will work.  Well, you are probably wondering why I don't try it. Well, it's one of those mail order deals, if I decide to buy it. The owner of the Colt '81 doesn't know (at least he is honest about the sale)if my kit will work because of series difference.  I have also heard "don't buy an 81 cause Colt put an extra safety device on it."  Well, I can live with all the safety devices, because it is not gonna be a CCW--just a shooter. What I am thinking is to make a 1911--.22 pistol out of it.  Can anybody help me on this one?

The Series 70 1911 (Colts) were redesigned, in the Series 80 pistols to have a internal safety.  The Series 70s and 80s do not match up as the 70s do not have, or are not cut for the frame and slide safety parts found in the Series 80.  Also, the 22 lr conversion you have may well have had to be fitted to your frame and may not fit the Series 80 pistol frame without being worked and the Series 80 safety may have to be removed to get the 22 conversion to work.

Some folk say you can mix and match the parts but others say it is quite difficult.  I think you should run this past the gunnut69, the Moderator for the Gunsmithing Forum and see what he has to say.

Ya know, you can also buy one of the new 1911 style 22s, Browning makes one and so does someone else (Chiappa, I think) and avoid the headaches.

Thanks for the info.  By the time I buy the Colt 80 and if I have to pay a gunsmith, I could buy a Kimber aluminum 1911 .22 RF. I fondled one of those Kimber .22's and my Browning Buckmark feels heavier and built more solid.  The Browning 1911 .22 RF looks nice, but it is scaled down.  Probably won't see them in LGS for a while.

I saw and fondled an all steel (blued) Kimber .22 conversion on an all steel 1911 Kimber frame  and it felt nice.  Not for sale.  :(
