My new AR build starting to take shape...6.8(FINISHED)

I have been assembling parts to build another AR. This one will be in 6.8SPC and will be of use during the whitetail season and to take on the impending pig invasion that is being forecasted for my home state of NY.


First, I ordered a Spike's Tactical stripped lower receiver.  Then, I found a deal on a 3-10x40 Bushnell 3200 Elite scope and ordered a Burris P.E.P.R 1" quick disconnect scope mount. 


I ordered a complete upper from AR15 Performance.com in 6.8.  Here are some of the specs from their website:

• 18" SPR mid-weight  416 stainless 6.8mm barrel,
• 1 in 11.25 " twist 5R rifling- .800" UTG, .750 GB, .700 muzzle
• 6.8X43 Chamber (high performance spec .100 freebore)
• 5/8-24 threaded muzzle
• ITS flash hider
• Single rail gas block
• Mid-Length length gas system
• Shrouded (full ramp) carrier with properly staked carrier key
• 9310 alloy super bolt
• M4 upper receiver with white T mark etching
• Extended  M4 Feed Ramps on receiver and barrel extension to aid feeding
• Mil Spec charge handle

 
The upper is on back order until the end of this month or some time in to February as they are waiting on barrels.  I also ordered a Spike's Tactical Enhanced Lower Parts Kit that comes with an ambidextrous safety, a Spikes Battle Trigger, and anti-rotation trigger and hammer pins, as well an an Ergo grip along with the usual assortment of mil-spec parts.


A Magpul ACS Stock rounds out the AR...

I'll update the pics when I have the gun completed assembled.  I might even have it camo dipped to make it uniquely mine.

Received my upper today...The Spikes Tactical lower was already assembled so all I had to do was slap the upper and lower together and mount the Burris P.E.P.R. and the Bushnell 3-10x40 Elite 3200 scope.

The only thing left to do now is to get to the range and shoot it.  I have 200 rounds of Hornady 110 grain BTHP ammo just waiting to go.

Hey man looks awesome...I like the non rotation pins on there... I just finished mine about 3 days ago and i have 4 different loads i loaded up to see which one it likes the best.... here are the specs... 
-Daniel Defense upper, Aero Precision lower, 16'' stainless DPMS chrome lined barrel, MOE stock, and a 4-16 power scope.....

 Even though it was raining, I went to the outdoor range anyway. I shot my Adams Arms 5.56 first but I wasn't able to get it to group well with 55 grain ammo. Things improved with 68 grain Black Hills ammo.

Anyway, on to my ARP 6.8x43 upper. I loaded up some 110 grain Hornady BTHP ammo into two different mags. After dialing in the scope and burning through about 32 rounds I loaded up one last magazine of 8 and moved to a fresh target. I shot this gun better than any other AR. I attribute the flyer to the nut behind the wheel and not the gun. I can't wait to get to the range again in nicer weather.

I've been trying to talk myself into a 6.8 upper for a couple years now.


I find myself vacillating between this and a Tikka in .270win. It would be a hunting gun in all honesty, but the swappable upper would be sweet for a combo varmint, predator / deer, antelope gun. For the cost of that Barbie Doll I could have a pure hunting rifle of known quantity, and chances are it would be cheaper to boot.


Are there any magazine issues I should know about before starting a 6.8 adventure? Cost and reliability come to mind as well as availability. I really do like the 6.8 route but I'm sort of traditional in nature.

I can't comment on magazine issues.  I purchased 3 ASC mags...10, 17, and 25 rounders.  All of them fed without an issue.  I have heard others having mag feeding issues.  There are fixes out there for that...Something to do with the feed lips.

Ditched the ACS stock in favor of the STR...Same cheek weld, slightly lower weight and a reversible push button QD sling mount. I decided that I did not need the storage compartment of the ACS. I use the battery tubes to store some extra foam ear plugs, just in case...I also added an IKH rear single point sling attachment. I'm not sure that I like that one though. I might swap it out down the road for a Magpul unit. I also have two quick release sling swivels just in case I want to run a two point sling while hunting...The Badger Ordnance Tactical Latch was also added due to the scope mount...
