Stutzen/Mannlicher style forend for Handi?
« on: January 05, 2012, 07:48:26 AM »
I was wondering if anyone has ever made, had made or seen a full barrel length Stutzen or Mannlicher style forend for a Handi rifle?

I''m a fan of the Stutzen/Mannlicher style stock and was thinking what a great mountain rifle a Handi in .270 with a Stutzen forend would be. I suppose a BC forend and cut barrel would come close, but I believe cutting a 270 barrel woulld be somewhat self defeating. Not that it would likely be economically viable, but is there anyone that might stand out as uniquely qualified to make one in your mind?

Here's an example of a great mountain rifle the Ruger #1 so stocked:

I have seen them here (GBO), they were original on some of the old H&Rs but very limited as many here hadn't seen many of them at all. Not sure of the model (topper?) but they look cool. I only have seen one forend go through the classifieds and it was a while ago.   thejanitor

What Brent said, H&R Inc made the Model 157, then they were offered again after 1987 sometime, several members here have some of those, myself included. The only source now is GSI.

Just a thought here....

A forend is pretty straight forward and can be made with some basic home workshop tools. Thinking...a drill press, router table, spokeshave or hand planes and sanding block. Sharp knife and a couple of good chisels. Good saw for trimming...and a few other tools which are more preferences than requirements. Patience and good measurements.
End caps and sling swivels are available from a multitude of dealer/suppliers for muzzleloading builders. You can purchase and can fit to your liking with little cost. Checkering is another story but companies like Brownells can get you going pretty good with starter kits and tutorials. Somewhat more costly to get started up but you'll always have the tools and the knowledge afterward.

Then it's fitting and finishing and bedding which you would need to do even if a stock supplier furnished one. Do you know anyone near you that has the time and basic woodworking or perhaps cabinet making capabilities?

Tim,

Those are great looking. Exactly what I was thinking. The 157 looks great with the color case hardening and the later Handi  looks a nice stock at least in the light. Sadly, seeing them serves only to increase my interest... May have to get the GSI forend and work from there, thanks.

JB,

I certainly have neither the time nor the ability but I can think of someone who might take up the challenge. I'll have to see what he thinks.

Thanks for looking it up. I was about to ask where the thread and/or auction was. Guess I'll have to keep my eyes open.

My 157 Hornet has one plus I got an after market one . The M157 forend will not fit other bbls without modification as the screw stud is closer to the frame than modern bbls. Winterhawk was that end cap steel or plastic? I think Tim has one that is steel?Kurt

You have inspired me!  I bought the GSI forend and MC cheekpiece buttstock and the forend cap and hardware from Numrich. Knowing myself, this could take years, but hopefully I will eventually have one.

And after buying the Numrich plastic forend cap, found this steel one at Midway in steel...http://www.midwayusa.com/product/695187/necg-mannlicher-style-forend-cap-610-blue

Kurt,

I can't find it searching 'mannlicher' 'stutzen' 'forend cap' 'cap' or 'harrington & richardson'. Could you please give me some direction as to what it's listed under at Dixie?

Thanks very much,

I really like the look of a full length stock-but how do they shoot? Is the full length barrel detrimental to accuracy?Does the end cap preclude  free floating?

Or just make one....pic is TC G2...stock is a old buffet top in cherry glued together.  Get a barrel channel cutter from Brownells (Gunline)  and go to work.

Here is my contribution to this post. Its an early '80s Mod, 157
30-30 Cal. Shoots great. Don't know if barrel lenght makes a differance.

My 45-70 with the mannlicher forend shot fine even with my old eyes behind the peep sight from 100yds....without the barrel band, didn't as so well with it. Shots #3 and #4 were after sight adjustments.

Sorry forgot to type anything. Here's a fore end I made to ride bags on the bench.Used a rotory rasp and a drill press for the channel and the end to the receiver.Wasn't hard to do and could've been cut down to a tapered end on the barrel.Hope this helps,Dave

You may have better luck lookimg up the correct spelling of the word, I believe it to be "Schutzen"....<><....:)

Stutzen isn't the same term as Schutzen, those darn Germans and their lingo!  ;) I have an RWS Stutzen for example.

Misspelled or not, but it's still a nice example of what can be done with a thought out plan and home workshop tools.  8)
