Open Invitation
« on: January 05, 2012, 10:04:02 AM »
I found the thread about where are you from? We all can't hunt together but we could shoot together. I am the State Director of IHMSA. There are three IHMSA ranges in Ky. Lawrenceburg, Crittenden and Paducah. All of us have many different interest I know. But all of us like to shoot and hunt with handguns and .22 rifles. So think about it and if it sounds like fun let me know. Some of you live within minutes of a range and may not know they even existed.

PM me or leave me a note here. I can forward you most any information you need. Matches start the first of March and run through October.

Thanks for posting Ted. It is a family oriented event. We have children shoot .22 rifles. We adults even like to take a turn with our rifles. You do not have to join IHMSA or any organization to shoot. We shoot from 25 yards to 200 meters. Any adjustable sighted handgun .22 long rifle or centerfire will work. If you handgun hunt this is a good place to hone your skills.

So about the .22 matches, My .22 LR rifle is an open sighted lever gun (Browning BL-22 carbine)  shooting for group size from formal match postions just does not fit this rifle.  What action type are most competitors using?  and what are the "games" played?

and yes, I received the PM,

I am asking here so maybe others with similar questions will have the answers here.  I know my lever action and my 44 year old eyes are not good for bench rest competitions  ;)

I shot at Lawrenceburg back in the mid to late 80s and met some good folks including an elderly local with a model 19 Smith that amazed me.  Do they still have the downhill chickens?  I may have to get back over there again.

They are not as downhill as they used to be. We upgraded all our targets to mechanical reset some years ago. We now have 5 different size of targets. Everything a long range handgun shooter/hunter would want to shoot at. Rimfire and centerfire. We even shoot .22 rifles with 1 rest just for fun.

My invitation is open to those that have been to a match before also. Would love to have you come on March 4th. We shoot rain or shine, hot or cold.

Keith I'm sorry to reply so slowly. I don't know how I missed this.

In Paducah as well as Lawrenceburg we divide up in 4 categories with .22 rifles. Scoped and open sighted with one rest and scope and open sighted standing. I'm not sure if they divide up into classes in Paducah. In Lawrenceburg we just lump everyone into 1 class in each category they shoot. You shoot at 40 targets. 10 chickens @ 25 yards 10 pigs @ 50 yards 10 tarkeys @ 75 yards and 10 rams @ 100 yards. In Paducah they have 1 size of target to shoot at. In Lawrenceburg we have 3 different size targets at those distances you can shoot at.

To answer your question about action types. I would say most are bolt actions with some Ruger 10-22s thrown in. Everything from target guns to regular hunting guns. When I shoot the rifle category I use my 14" T C Contender that I use to shoot pistol silhouette with. The main thing is to have fun. I think you will be surpised how well you BL-22 will do. I hope this helps.

The main thing I learned when I participated was that the equipment didn't matter nearly as much as one's ability with it.  Reference my comment above about the old dude with the model 19.  My gun was worth more than his truck, gun, dog and a few other things yet he made everyone there look like fools.  Run what you brung so to speak and run it well and everyone will be on your side no matter the outcome.

True enough.  I showed a fellow a thing or three on the trap line one year.  Me in jeans, t-shirt, and packin' a 20 ga 870 express (that I had altered slightly to fit me and polished till it was as slick as the old wingmasters, with some barrel work and a polished out extended choke tube) I shot 99 that day, the guy next to me packin a Purdy o/u in 28 ga, dressed to the 9's, and talked the talk shot a 65.

Now if I had showed up with a plain jane bone stock as issued 870 express, no I would not have shot as well ( I actually shot a 30 the first time I tried that gun in trap)  So if we are shootin mostly scoped guns off a bench I'd want a wide fore arm stock on a bolt gun, or maybe a finely tuned semi-auto  ;)

The actual sport of silhouette is shot with handguns without artificial support. Keith asked about .22 rifles and they are fun to shoot. They are normally shot standing without artificial support or prone, kneeling or sitting with one support. It is still a challenge to hit the targets with a rifle and a rest.

Glad to hear your going to give it a try Keith. I assume you are going to Paducah as it is the closest to you. Don't forget to contact the match directors before going.

Greg,
Thanks for the invite and introduction to IHMSA!!

I attended the match yesterday in Lawrenceberg and had a ball. This was my first foray into the world of IHMSA and shooting steel. All I can say is that I am hooked!! I dove right in shooting BB UAS with my Contender 7 TCU and 6.5 JDJ barrels. Was tickled pink with 34/40 and 36/40 respectively!!
If anyone is interested in giving it a try, the guys at Anderson County are great! Offered a lot of good advice and a great atmosphere to ease into the sport. Save for the weather (think it hovered at about 31 degrees without the windchill), a good time was had by all. I can honestly say, this was a great experience and I forsee a check going in the mail to IHMSA for a membership.
Greg, thanks again! I'll see you guys in April!! Hopefully, have a IHMSA # next time I show up. Will even see if I can get David fired up and have him drag his TC up there for a whirl!

Lawrenceburg's next match is April 1st. Hope to see you there. My invitation still stands. Remember there are two other ranges in the state. If you live close to one of them they would love to have you.
