velocity vs BC
« on: January 05, 2012, 04:47:49 PM »
i understand that ballistic co-efficent expresses the ability for a bullet to slip thru the air and shed less energy. but at what approx range does BC trump velocity? i recently bought a 300 weatherby and while researching loads it seems a high velocity load eg 168gr Custom Competion @ 3300fps and a BCof 0.462 shoots flatter out to 1000yds than a 200gr AccuBond @ 3000 fps with a BC of 0 .588. i used to shoot out to 800 with my 308 shooting 168smks and was tempted to go to 178's for the higher BC never did. felt the lower velocity and added recoil wasn't off set by the higher BC. seemed to me if it go there quicker the better.

BC starts playing into things as early as 100 yards depending on the load.  Point blank range of any firearm is going to be improved with higher BC in it's particular bullet.  It's going to vary a lot depending on weight of bullet, length of bullet and rifling twist rate.  I play with the ballistics calculators at JBM Ballistics to see what the bc will do at any given range with a load.  Sorry, this probably isn't what you want to know, but best I can think of to tell you.  ;)
