45acp or 9mm in contender
« on: January 08, 2012, 03:17:37 AM »
Im feeling the itch to buy either a 45acp or a 9mm in a carbine-16inch Contender barrel. Maximum length being a 16inch or 18inch.  Anyone have one of these calibers? I'm leaning towards the 9mm....A scoped -9mm +p+ 115.........

I have an 18" 45 auto barrel.  Its a hoot, funner than  a 22 rifle. Pushes a 255gr Lee RNFP at 1050fps using HS7.  Also have had a 16" 9mm. Sold it and am goingto get a 20" tapered barrel in 9mm from MGM.  Velocities for the 9mm ran 150-200fps faster than a pistol.  Also have a 8.25" Contender pistol barrel, velocities are around 100fps faster than a 4" barrel auto.  I also have a 24" 38 Special barrel and this one is close to my favorite, tho the 45 is close.

Should be long enough to quiet it down somewhat.  I like the idea.  Loaded to .38 Special specs, it seems like it would be very handy with very light recoil and great for punching paper or small game hunting.  Then it could be loaded up to match .357 magnum and used for deer/hog size game as long as you were careful to make sure it never ends up in a .38 revolver.  I have a Rossi .357 with a 20" barrel that does all of the above for me, but your 24" sounds like it would be better with light loads than my Rossi.

Lonegun1894.  Man you hit it right on the head.  Even tho 9mm would be more efficient with light loads.  The 38 loaded to 890fps sounds about like a 22LR  hi-velround.  Tho a little quieter.  A 125gr Golden Sabre at 1600fps will group inside 3"at 200 yards. I also have a 20" Rossi 357.  Would be hard pressed to pick one over thee other.  3leg

I had a 18" IIRC 45acp barrel that was a tack driver. The same load that I shot in my 1911 gained 250fps or more in the longer tube.

Got to playing around with Rem 180?gr HP jacketed and Blue Dot. Won't list the load, but the charge was compressed. velocity was aver 1,600fps with no signs of pressure at all, no case expansion beyond normal, primers were still round on the edges.

Was going to try the Lee 300gr RFN but never got around to making a nose sizer so the bullet would enter the rifling, then sold the barrel.
