Report: Britain dispatches advanced warship to Persian Gulf Daily Telegraph reports that deployment of the HMS Daring is intended to send a message to Iran following its recent 10-day exercise in the Gulf and threats to close the Strait of Hormuz.By Haaretz and Reuters Tags: Iran Iran threat Iran US Iran nuclear            The Royal Navy is sending its most advanced warship to the Persian Gulf, in a deployment intended to send a message to Iran following its threats to close the Strait of Hormuz, the Daily Telegraph reported.
According to the report, the HMS Daring, a Type 45 destroyer, will depart Portsmouth next Wednesday and has been equipped with new technology that will enable it to intercept any Iranian missile. It also reportedly possesses the world's most sophisticated naval radar.

  Earlier this week, British Defense Secretary Philip Hammond warned Iran against blocking the strait.
On Friday, Iran announced it will carry out more military exercises in the strait. Iran recently completed a 10-day drill in the strategic waterway.
Western countries have readied plans to use strategic oil stocks to replace almost all Gulf oil lost if Iran blocks the waterway, Reuters reported, citing industry sources and diplomats.
16 million barrels a day of crude pass through the strait daily.
Iranian officials have threatened in recent weeks to block the strait if new sanctions imposed by the United States and planned by the European Union, with the aim of discouraging Iran's nuclear program, harm Iran's oil exports.
Earlier this week, Iran said it would take action if the United States sailed an aircraft carrier through the strait.

Well, they may mess around and get us into another war over there. If the straits are closed for any length of time, that could sent oil to $200 per barrel or more. High oil prices act as a tax on the economy and almost always leads to recession. Since our economy is already at recession levels along with that of Europe, this could be disastrous for the economies of the western world and drive Iranian oil into the hands of the Chinese. Greece and eastern Europe are dependent on that oil.

GARY. Are you saying that Britain is wrong for taking action to avoid this potential disaster?? The fault should fall on the ishmaelites doing the instigating, not us or the Brits. POWDERMAN.

Powderman, what potential disaster are you speaking of? straits of Hormuz?
It seems that France, US, England, but not some other euro countries want to put an embargo on Iran's oil. This is an act of war. Iran has responded by saying that they will retaliate by closing the straits. This is probably a futile bluff. It would prevent their neighbors from selling their oil. I doubt if Iran wants to irritate their neighbors.
It doesn't seem reasonable that Iran would want a war that they could not win. However, poke them enough and it could happen. Economically, it would not be in our best interest.


Poke on a hornets nest and you are likely to get stung. Smart folks will remain at a distance.

Powderman, what potential disaster are you speaking of?

 
GARY. Disrupting the free flow of oil could hurt a lot of countries worse off and not as affluent as we are.  Gas here jumped another 20 cts the past few days. I can imaging the price by the time the speculators and crooks got through scaring the public about a shortage. I posted about precautions being taken and options weighed in case the straits are blocked. Should they try it they will lose their navy. It upsets me too that obama has thus far rejected the pipeline from Canada. POWDERMAN.

Powderman, an embargo would also interrupt the free flow of oil. It seems that some in Washington are salivating over another war rather than considering the economic consequences. It seems that the American people would grow tired of sending their children to fight these political wars.

I think the REAL power players in the world whomever they are have made the decision already that for some reason we must have war with Iran. I have no real clue why as they are no real threat to anyone other than perhaps Iraq which they've always coveted.

They are not and never have been a threat to the US nor to Europe. I don't believe they ever will be. Still that cabal of super rich people who are truly in charge in the world have apparently made up their minds that Iran is next on the list to wage war on. Stupid.

It is for no other reason than to run up the price of oil so the super rich can get richer and so the military war materiels makers can keep pumping out the bombs, bullets, planes and missles so still more people can die for them to get richer. Well maybe one other reason that is to make sure their chosen one is elected this fall.

Well, electrons burned... fuel for escorts... parts/wear on a/c if they're conducting flight ops... and stoopid on the part of the admiral who goes there. Carriers ought not be in the gulf, too easily scuppered by Iranian land forces. Persian Gulf is kind of small for carrier ops against a capable opponent. Of course, for the last few decades, USN has been used to operating against 3rd world nations.

I was not or ever was a navy man, but common sense would agree.  Your naval experience pays off , and are words of wisdom.

In case of a Iranian closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the US fleet carrier group could just as easily operate from the Med (overfly Turkey & Iraq) or from the Arabian Sea.
