I drive through Illinois regularly, and have found it remarkable that there is so little roadkill in the state already. There are a few deer in the fall, and some other critters, but most of the year there is amazingly little roadkill. Contrast that with adjacent Wisconsin, where the best way to drive through it is to get behind a big rig and stay there, hoping for the best.

colorado allows tagging and taking game road kill.  I dont know if this applies to taking a fox pelt or the like, though.  I have never been there when the event actually happened, and do not think I would want anything that had not been taken care of right away.  On the other side of the coin, you cannot legally finish off a hurt animal unless LE is already there and gives permission.  They will do it, which may be a better idea than any old guy trying to make a good head shot with a lot of spectators, both the unpleasantness of it and the over penetration or ricochet thing.  I know of a few instances where friends have finished a deer they found and not said another word.

I did see a wildlife sanctuary truck chain sawing a deer a couple years ago right down the street.

The finishing game off is a legal question not a safety issue. This gets into the taking of game out of season without a license.  The question of guns legal for taking big game discharging firearms on public right of ways. They have to enforce their states regulations on the taking of game.

I have always wondered about the legalities of this.  A friend of mine had a deer run into his wifes car while she was driving late at night and he pulled the deer off the road and slit its throat to put the thing out of its misery and then he took the back straps off it.  He was in the middle of no where and had no phone service and wasnt gonna turn around and go back to town to call the cops over it.  I told him not to go around telling too many people about it cause I didnt think it was legal.  He didnt seem to care.

Does anyone know what states allow it?  All I could find was about Illinois.

Not real sure on Indiana's law. Do know they will come out and finish the animal and give you a tag for the deer.  I have been told (when calling in) to put the animal down if I wanted. I have also put one down with the county patrol standing there. He was a new guy and stood around for 5-10 minutes before I told him I had my shotgun in the truck. After asking why I had it, he then told me I could shoot it if I wanted ;)  Guess he was not a hunter.

If you call in a road kill here in Ohio, they'll come out and tag it. That's if you want to take it to a processor.A friend of mine 10 years ago or so, seen 2 deer get hit, and was on the side of the road when the State patrol showed up. When he told them he was going to take care of it himself, they didn't even write him up a tag. He loaded it ijnto his truck and off he went. gypsyman

Growing up I knew a family that had an old pick-up with a cow-catcher front bumper, this was their deer hunting truck, and I wouldn’t even try to estimate all the illegal deer they took by running them down.  For this reason many states adapted the practice of not allowing road kill to be taken.  I’m sure there are those out there today that would run down a deer if they thought they could take the meat.

I can see the good side to this, not allowing the meat to go to waste, but I can also see a possibility of illegal hunters running them down.  It’s a darned if you do, darned if you don’t situation.

A couple of weeks ago we watched a story on the Discovery Channel where two old guys on motorcycles travel around and try different things to eat, on this program they were in North Carolina with some ole boy that “harvested’ road kill every morning,  He took everything, even snakes and prepared it for his meals.  I wouldn’t want to live like that, but I’m sure the largest part of road kill is editable an d could be used, if desired.

Amazing how much fresh meat can be garnered from roadkill.  However, let me point out that any skunk that has laid in one spot for 24 hours without moving is definitely NOT fit to eat.  Goat

Here in Alaska roadkill Moose Caribou or Bear have to be reported to the state.  Depending on the location, the troopers have a list of who to call.  Within a certain range of Fairbanks the Food Bank gets it.  Farther out of town people put their name on the list and get called.  When  Moose, Caribou, or Bear get hit more damage is done to the vehicle than to the animal.  Seldom any meat is lost.  Have known many people out in the sparsely populated areas along the road, who hit Moose or Caribou during hunting season, just tag it and take it home.  With seasons open from Sept to the end of Feb, it easy.

Now that you mention it, Our county in southeren Indiana does have a call list. But it you call it in they will give it to you. Probably to save someone from calling down the list.

A friend of mine is on the road kill call list in my town. He regularly gets venison and sometimes moose.

Some states I've heard sell scavenger tags.
Mostly here we just call the local game warden and he'll give you a carcass tag.

This morning while driving the wife in to work, we got held up.  Fortunately we got off the Richardson highway at Badger road.  I drove the shoulder for a little over 1/4 mile to get to the exit, as traffic was stopped all going into town.  Here is the reason.  Got this from today's Fairbanks Daily News Miner.Moose-vehicle collision slows morning traffic on Richardson Highway   by  Sam Friedman / sfriedman@newsminer.com   Jan 18, 2012          FAIRBANKS - An accident with a moose took three hours to clean up on the Richardson Highway near the first Badger Road exit this morning, causing delays on the highway.

Someone driving into a Fairbanks struck the moose shortly before 6 a.m. at Mile 358 of Richardson Highway, said Lt. Matt Soden with the Fairbanks police department, who was not at the scene of the accident but had the police report of the crash.

The moose was killed and there was a record of person being injured but not of anyone being transported to the hospital, he said. Temperatures at the time were near minus 40.

The traffic was slowed while the scene was cleaned up until about 8 a.m. A charity was called to salvage the moose meat, he said.

Here in Arizona, you have to be the one involved with the road kill. You must also contact a law enforcement agent, which in turn issue you a salvage tag. If the animal is not dead, law enforcement is the only one who can legally dispatch it.You cannot claim any animal some body else hits with their vehicle, even if one gets permission from the damaged party. Kinda sucks, but better than the way it used to be, which was total waste of the animal.

Does anyone know what states allow it?  All I could find was about Illinois.

In NYS if you hit a deer and you want what's left, you just call, and when the police come to do the accident report, you tell them you would like to take the deer.  Some of the cops just tell you to take the deer carcass, other will give you a deer possession tag.
