Most cannon makers use 1.750 for golf ball diameter, just for that reason.

The Rules of Golf specify only a minimum diameter for a golf ball (Wikipedia reference); competition between manufacturers for the "longest ball" keeps them as close to minimum as possible.  Since the minimum diameter by rule is 1.680", I would be surprised to find them much larger than that.  Certainly one .040" larger would be a surprise.  Was that box a box of practice rejects?

There are a number of diameters used for bores.  I use 1.719" (1 23/32").  The 1/40 rule would be 1.723" (43.76mm) which is not a standard drill diameter.

Buzz36, You probably already know this, but a good way to gage your projectiles is to have a tube that has the same ID as the bore and about 3 calibers long to roll your projectiles through to see if they are "fit" to use.

I believe my barrel is 1.75" and the retrieved balls I have fired all show a 3/8" "drag line" or band where it appears the ball deformed and was in intimate contact with the bore.  I would suspect that when using a golf ball as a projectile the deformation of the ball is alot greater than most cannon projectiles.

We've always recommended the 1.723" dia. here.  I've made a bunch at 1.75 but they need a bit of patching.  Even at the 1.72 diameter there will be an occasional ball or two that are TIGHT.

I picked up 5 gallons of them at 5 cents each at a yard sale once, so I don't bother picking some of them up.
