What dis was?

Strangest thing.   :-\  I was coming out of my stand Sunday and happened to turn around and look down my back trail.  The first thing I saw was a torn up cypress tree.  It was such a sight my first words were "what the hell happened to that tree!?"   ???
 
The bark was shredded up to 8 or 10 feet.  You could see what appeared to be claw marks.  Almost like the tree was raked.   :o
 
My first thought was a bear.  There hasn't been one reported in this area since the colonial days, but what with the fires down in the Okefenokee swamp and all...
 
Y'all got any ideas?

A peed off shrew can be very destructive. Dont return to the area without a proper 12 man team as backup, carring nothing less than magnums. Be very careful he may be lurking under the leaves close by.   ;D

I can pretty much garonteeeee that it was a black bear Richard.    We got the exact same thing down at our place.... a big cedar tree clawed up from knee height to 7+feet ....litterally shredding the bark......  We gots so many of them blackies we are sending them up your way ;D ;D ;D   Jes watch your feeders - these bears coming north through our place have learned that feeders hold a sizable amount of corn and  they know how to destroy the feeders to get to said corn.    we have lost about 14 feeders in the past 24 months..... >:(

I was hopin you'ld give your opinion Gregg.
 
Looks like I'll be carrying my 44 Mag revolver instead of my 22 Mag Ruger Single Six this weekend.  To darn bad bear season is over...  :(

I agree with the 44 mag Richard.  Tha's what I carry or a stout loaded 45 acp +P.    all the Blackies we have encountered here have just scooted away whenever we are in eyesight.     
 
Hi ebber (I plagiarized this from someone we both know  ;D )  The bear experts up in Alaska told me on one of my trips that Blackies rarely charge with a bluff..... if they are coming your way it is most likely a predatory attack - so don't drop and cover as you do with a Grizzly - a Blackie would just make you a meal.   :(     they say fight like your life depends on it - 'cause it does.
It is amazing how smart them critters are..... they have been seen recently on camera within 15 minutes of filling a feeder, scattering corn or a feeder going off.   They have learned the sounds and smells and learned how knock over or dismantle any feeder for a meal.   We are going to have to sell a few bear hunts next season.

Most likely bear.  There have been bear in Hogansville, Ga. south of Hotlanta, and in my Troup County, as well as several killed on I 185 near Columbus.  Since they are apparently migrating from two directions, it's likely.  I saw a small one several years ago in Troup.  DNR said not a bear, so I asked what would happen if I shot the not a bear.  He mentioned jail, fine flogging, etc.

Well, I believe y'all are right, what with all the bear Gregg has down on his lease and he's just 25 miles or so south of the farm.  I guess time will tell for sure.
 
I wonder if they will be able to establish a resident population.   :-\   Not likely I'm afraid.  Some of these folk shoot what they want to when they want to.   :(

Just wondering.  I saw some phoney bear skin rugs the other day, and was a mind to buy one, but as I got closer they got tackier.....too phoney.

Probably a bear. Maybe bigfoot, but probably a bear. Haven't seen anything like that here in Alabama but my 45 LC Ruger is always on my hip when I'm in the woods. Just a good feeling to know it's there. Looking forward to pics if you get any.

Only been back one time since deer season and that was to hunt squirrels.  That time I carried a .45 Colt revolver along with my 22!   :D
 
Not that I'm all that worried about a bear attack...  :-\   but there's always hope!   ;)   So I'll still be carrying a suitable firearm when we're doing some neighborhood improvement and such around our stands.

Dem b'ars been wrecking our place down Sou' of ya Richard.   One of our members set up a camera after he rebuilt his feeder that got et up last month.    Feeder's on 10 foot stilts and the bottom of the spinner is at 8'11" high.    He gotsum pix of this REEAL BIG Blackie  :o  standin on one foot on tip toe, other foot and one paw balancing on one of the stilts, reachin up scratching the bottom of the spinner.  ???   Looks like some ballerina critter in a Disney movie!   ;D    We be  thinkin about selling some B'ar Hunts next season!   
 
I goin down weekend of the 24-26th to do some food plot maintenence and put my feeders on 16' poles with a boat winch to bring it upndown.    Hopefully that'll keep curious paws out of reach.

I probably won't get down to the farm until March sometime.  That reminds me, gotta look up the turkey opener!   ;D
 
Anyway, someday, maybe when the planets are all in alignment, maybe then we'll be able to get together!
