How do you carry .22 ammo.
« on: January 10, 2012, 01:51:40 AM »
I just started hunting with a tube feed gun.  I've been using the CCI packs of bullets with the sliding lid.  It's easy to dump them out to load the gun but a pain to put back in.  Have any of you used the uncle mikes .22 bullet belt pouch?  I was also thinking of the Spee-d-load loaders, but I doubt you could dump them back into it easily?

I just use the boxes they come in as well.

I don't like tube feed 22's, seems there is always a "extra" bullet in there. Mine are clip fed. But even so 12-15 bullets is of little bother for me and keeping the bullets clean of debris is not such a bad thing either....

I'm not really a fan of tube fed guns either even thought that is what I learned with (as didmany others)   I just carriages them in what ever they came in or an old slid top box for bulk ammo. My grandad uses an old leather pocket money purse to carry his ammo about and is fairly convenient.

I save old CCI boxes and put whatever brand in them.
I only put 15 in my Henry even though I think it holds 16.
Hunt with a 10/22 and carry a spare mag and a few loose cartridges.

I've had a bunch of Uncle Mike's rimfire ammo pouches since the 70's I think, both woodland camo and black, and have had and used most of the products they came down the pike with over the years.   Kind of helps that all through the 80's I used to go to Portland on business a couple of times a year.   A stop at their factory buildings was a must do on those trips to stock up and see what was new but not advertised yet.   They recognized and sold direct to me wholesale, and most trips I brought home a huge box of goodies.   Anyway, I have used these rimfire pouches for 22RF, 22WRF, 22WMR, 17HM2, 17HMR and a host of centerfires over the years, rifle and pistol.    Not only for field carry hunting, but for truck and range shooting as well.   Doesn't matter whether for a tube or clip feed or single shot or handgun - or whether loose ammo or for carrying extra loaded clips or speed loaders.   They are just handier to reload from than ammo boxes, the Velcro open/close makes them fast to use and by having both colors I can have different loads handy at my fingertips to pick the one for a situation as it comes up hunting, or for multiple firearms carried as the case may be.    I also have a bunch of their ammo wallets, each dedicated to a particular cartridge, so on hiking hunts where few shoots will be taken I'm all set with a quiet way to carry that protects the ammo.    As for the cleanliness thing, never had any problem with that either, and I just leave what's left in them for the next time more often than not.

This thread inspired me to check their web site.  Unfortunately it looks like they don't offer these ammo pouches anymore.   Too bad, they are very handy.

He's two still "primed' from the last time I took a 17HMR out hunting.   Despite the 25-30 years of hard use they are still as good as new except for some fading.   The black has Hornady V-Max and the camo CCI TNT, so I could switch to a situation on the hunt.   I normally use the V-Max for small game, jacks or ground squirrels jumped, the TNT for predators and for all the others at the longest ranges.   With my clip feed Hummer I carried the same but as loaded clips in them.   Two of the three Hummers I had shot both of these so close to the same POI that going back and forth was never a problem making a perfect shot at even extreme range.

Ladobe,
They still make those pouches. I saw them listed somewhere.

PowPow,
I started hunting with the Henry and I leave the 10-22 home now.  I like the Henry better.  It is much more consistent.  It's lighter and easier to carry.  It is just a little awkward to load and unload like any tube feed.

I found some cellphone pouches at a dollar store, bought a bunch for different calibers. I shoot single shots mostly and don't need to drag a wagon full of ammo with me anymore.

I read your post the other day and didn't have much to offer. Then this morn I was headed out to the country and needed to bring along some 22 bullets. Looking around my loading room and wa-la there was a bunch of empty bullet boxes. I picked a sturdy plastic one that was about the right size for the number of bullets I thought I would need. It was a Speer 90 gr 270 bullet box. Kind of flat so it fit in a pocket good and would have held maybe 75 - 120 rds if I had filled it up. It is hard plastic, but the bullets don't rattle nearly as bad as those CCI boxes.

Depends on the gun I am using.
Most are detachable magazine and I carry and extra mag or two.
Other than that I have a few old ditty bags that things like jackets, watches, or candy bars came in.  Like the Royal Crown bags only smaller.  The Jacket one holds 500+ rounds of 22LR from the bulk pack, the watch bag holds 100 rounds of 22CB longs, and the candy bar bag hold 200+ 22 Mag from the paper boxes.
And then I found the Triple K 107 100 round ammo pouch.  Hold 2 paper boxes of 22's hold 100 loose rounds of 22LR about 75 to 80 22 Mag or 17HMR and holds 223 ammo as well for when I am using the T/C pistol.  Also hold two 5 round CZ 527 mags.
Great little pouch. and the latch is positive.
Before that I have used a Civil war bullet pouch that I have for my 1858 and 1860 Cap and ball revolvers.   Also by Triple K,  Doubles as a military compac holder.

Mostly I use an old Army surplus ammo or 1st aid pouchs depending on what gun I'm carrying. The smaller nylon pouch works good for loose ammo and the bigger hard pouch works for 10-22 clips or plastic 22 boxes.

Hard to beat a ziploc sandwich bag in the pocket.  It's what I've used since they came available.  Rather affordable too. :D

Zip lock bags, old pill bottles, leather pouches, pockets, empty "chew" containers, altoids tins, empty CCI boxes,...............just kinda whatever, whenever. I usually tape the 50 round cardboard boxes closed and have a box in a ziplock in my day pack. I usually carry a .22 revolver when deer hunting for grouse.
Had an H&R 22 top break for awhile, carried a couple of speed loaders for it. Liked the gun, never should have sold it.

I used to do that but ended up washing a bunch and when bending over to pick up a tree rat I have dumped some on the ground not thinking.

On national wildlife refuges most of us were cops as another extra duty in addition to our regular job. Some of us took it fairly seriously others, not so much. One of my bosses carried his extra pistol ammo in an old sock.

I use a pouch made out of a leg off a pair of worn out blue jeans. My mother made this for me about 35 years ago. Because she has passed.....it has a lot of sentimental value. Works great when placed in a coat pocket, you can easily slip your hand in it to retrieve cartridges. When not out in the field or at the range, my daughter "donated" one of her hair bands which keeps it rolled up nicely.

I  carry mine in either a ziplock or just dump some in my front pocket.

MC,
I've not yet washed my ammo. I have washed my turkey calling diaphrams a few times. I can tell ya from experience that Tide or whatever fabric softner my wife buys don't taste that well...

Another nice little pouch that fits on your belt are the cases made for the new little digital cameras. The one I have is a little big for the number of 22's a guy would need, but I bet you could find one to fit 10-22 mags pretty good.

For my .22 tuber's, I carry ammo in "free" speedloaders - fast food chain soft drink straws, corked with foam earplugs.

I hate anything that rattles while hunting, and the CCI plastic boxes are really bad. I think jack rabbits must have evolved a function in their brain where if they hear one rattlin' they think it's a rattlesnake and automatically run five miles without stopping.

If it's a non-greasy ammo like the copper-washed stuff, I just put in my pant pocket. Greasy lead goes in a leather pouch with the flat spring closure, then in a pocket. No velcro noise with them...

One option for a 5 round mag...

I've washed my share of ammo left in pockets and once washed it inside of a gun (NAA mini revolver). "What's that clunking noise in the dryer, honey?"  :o
