Want one and want it Bad! 44 mag shorty!
« on: January 10, 2012, 04:36:51 PM »
Got a 44 shorty stuck in that stuff between my ears! Does anybody have experiance shooting 44 special loads out of Handi, probably shoot mostly factory loads. Have been looking for carbine to go with 45 acp or 9mm and they were ugly or to expensive and then thought why not a Handi in 44 mag to go with my CA 44 bulldog.  My local guy said he would get me a youth synthetic 44 w/rail for $280 bucks.  Any and all feed back welcome, Greybeard Rocks!

Thanks Jason, thats the kind of info I can use.  Do it yourself or hire it out, and of course what did it cost?

I have a shorty I built in 44 special.   I found a H & R  M48 with a 12 & 20 ga. barrels at a great price and put a 44 cal. liner in the 20 ga @ 18".   On my shorty I have a Burris Fastfire red dot sight mounted about where a rear sight would be on a rifle and works great.
Out of a 18" barrel you can get velocities of a 44 mag. out of a handgun with 44 special and recoil is light. I have shot 1 deer with it with a cast lead Lyman Devastator HP bullet and the deer was DRT.

I sent a SB2 frame to Ilion for the 44 mag talo barrel this November and got it back in December.  Ive only shot it once, but it is showing potential.

I'm in progress with a 30-30 shorty.  Any thoughts out there regarding the recrowning of the freshly cut muzzle?  Flat or 11 degree?  I'm leaning toward 11 degree if for no other reason than protection of the rifling.

See the FAQs, there are several links to home crowning with no special tools requires, as long as the crown is recessed slightly, doesn't matter too much, cut it off, file it smooth and square, use a carriage bolt and valve grinding compound to recess the crown, done it several times myself. Have also use a crowning tool, not a lot of difference in the finished product cuz they all shoot good.

IIRC, Gendoc or LONGTOM has a rifle with the muzzle cut at an angle that shoots bug holes!  ;D

jedman,
How did you prepare the 20ga barrel for the liner?  It seems the tapered barrel would be very thin  near the end after enlarging the bore to chamber size.
