Bought new truck insurance and this ticked me off!!!!!!!
« on: January 10, 2012, 07:00:41 PM »
I bought new truck insurance just prior to leaving Florida and moving to Texas. Well I was dealing with an insurance broker and he checked with several companies to find me my lowest rate. This is the part that pissed me off. He told me I could save 30% through Progressive if I permitted them to install a device on my dash board that would track my driving habits such as speed, braking and I don't remember what else because at that point there was no way that was going to fly with me and quit listening to the other things. I told him no way no how would I allow such a device in my truck. I also told him that is the big brother crap that I am so against. I also told him I would not do business with a company with these type of practice's and I would rather pay more than to deal with that company. I have not had an accident or a ticket in 20 years and my driving record reflects that. How do you guys feel about this? would you allow them to install a device if it were to save you some money or would you react like I did. I am interested on what your thought on this are. Thanks and take care Dale

I saw that while I was in Florida myself.  No way is one of those ever going to get in my vehicle.  I play around too much, just for fun.  If no one is around I will take off and let the rear wheels get out of line and hold it for as long as I can.  When I need to reverse my direction and go the other way, I crank the wheel, hit the gas, spin the rear tires, and sling the rear end around. (Easy to do on ice and snow, gets noisy on dry pavement).  If the insurance company got wind of the way I drive, and have always drove that way, they would drop me for sure.

In 50 years of driving I have only had three accidents.
1.  Kid ran a stop sign, I broadsided him.  He got the ticket.
2.  Guy slammed on his brakes for no reason, just as his tires hit dry pavement, I was still on ice.  He got out said no damage, let's exchange information, then forget it.  I agreed, we both drove off.  He brought a claim against my insurance company, I never knew about it till it was settled out of court.  My insurance company and I got scammed.
3.  Last winter, Lady past me pulled into my lane, leaving me no safety buffer.  I started slowing down.  Light turned red, she hit the brakes hard.  Her front tires hit dry pavement, again I was still on ice.  I almost stopped, but my bumper caved in the sheet metal on the rear hatch of her Honda Mini Van.  We did not call the the cops, we just called our insurance agent.  We had the same agent.  The lady explained just what happened, and I concurred.  I have never heard a thing about it since.  My agent said to forget it.  (The ironic thing is she had just got the Van out of the shop that morning, having the rear hatch replaced.)  No damage to my S-10.

I drove as a test driver for Volks Wagen/Audi/Bentley and other prototypes shipped up here for testing, for two years.  We had computers in the cars that monitered everything we did.   I was asked to come to the office more than once to explain how I could drive all day and only have X number of times using the brakes.  I only used the brakes like 10% as much as the other drivers.  I told them I down shifted before a turn, went around the turn accelerating, then shifted back up and went on.  They asked me to use the brakes more.

Got bad news for ya.  If you buy a new or newer car the data recorder is built into the onboard computer.  Your dealer and law enforcement can extract this info at will whether you like it or not.  That info can then be used against you in many different ways.  Wireless connectivity means easy access without entering your vehicle also.

Syco is right.  You most likely already have this device, it's just not readily available to progressive.

They successfully weeded you out because you are a bad risk and do not deserve the discount. They know that good risks will be happy to save 30 percent. That is the deal. Big discount for low risk drivers.

They did not weed me out I weeded them out and how do you figure I'm a high risk driver when I have not had an accident in 20 years? Dale

The point is, high risk drivers will not consent to the device.  By insuring only drivers who will consent they virtually assure themselves of less liability.  It doesn't matter if you are high risk or not for this to work out in their favor since they can't lose.  Conan is right.  They were in control and they weeded you out by letting you think you were making the choice.

BTW, might want to get rid of your cell phone while you're at it.  Location and speed can be tracked from it by anyone who chooses to.  All they need is your number.

At 65, I don't have anything to hide, and I certainly do not speed.  I always wear my seatbelt.  If they want to pay me for my driving record to the post office and back, or to the hardware store, I'll take it.

Every male I know has fun in the snow like Sourdough does. Also every wife I know yells at her husband when he skids around corners. I doubt Progressive"s instrument would be able to detect an occasional intentional skid.

If it were the government wanting something like this then no way, but if I could save a few bucks on car insurance for sure I would do it. In fact maybe I ought to check Progressive out. I have only had a couple three insurance claims in about 50 years of driving and I don't like paying higher premiums than necessary for stupid drivers.

What good is a phone that is always turned off?  The newer smart phones, which is what all are changing to, can always be triangulated between multiple cell towers as long as the battery is in the phone.  Guess what?  The batteries aren't removable in the new phones with anything less than complete disassembly!  All the new phones have what you are told is a phone finder feature that is to be used in case you lose your phone.  R i i i i ght!  It will locate your phone from any other phone on a map to within 30 feet or less.  The older dumb phones didn't have this feature and have to be turned on to locate but they are being phased out rapidly.

Many are making similar statements that THEY will never allow it in anything THEY own when they already have it and they unknowingly paid for it, no matter if it is a vehicle or phone.  Right now the only restrictions are in who has access to the info and those restrictions are disappearing fast.

Old Syko is right.  Was talking to the owner of the local Ford Dealership.  He said the same thing.  He said if folks knew what was in the vehicle they would demand it be disabled, but the Federal government won't let them do it.  Plus it is set up to where if you try and disable it, the vehicle won't run.  Once they get the sensors up in the highways, you won't be able to speed anymore.  It will shut you down when you reach the speed limit.  And they will be able to find your vehicle, and your cell phone, no matter where you are.  My 94 Miata does not have that feature.  I'm keeping my Miata.

Onstar is GM using the already existing system for profit.

In Va there are sensors mounted on over passes and other places that capture diesel truck signatures and lic plate numbers. Once they have a truck in the data base they have it on record. Then a sensor can be placed anywhere to see what trucks go by and how fast. That was over 10 years ago it is a matter of time before all vehicles will leave the factory already installed in a data base . Speeding you worry about ? How about miles driven per year for taxes ? How about road taxes charged to you from other states ? How about your vehicle being near a crime and you being detained for it ?
These devices are like the GPS system we use to track our trucks its control plain and simple. When we installed them in our trucks fuel usage went down over 30% .
Its not all how you drive but where you drive , if you go to areas with high accident rates then you may find your insurance cost go up. If you claim 12000 miles a year but drive 20000 your cost rises. They bait you in then switch the rules after you establish your data. You could drive perfect but be charged because of time you drive, where you drive or how much you drive.
But then cell hones and some charge cards spill the beans anyway .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

There's nothing really new about any of this.  When cars first started using onboard computers around 1980 we were told info tracking and total control was the goal.  The end goal is to replace everything but the passenger.  That way you will have no control of your own destiny while transporting.  By the late 80s mechanics had what was known as a copilot.  If you had one of those problems that the mechanic couldn't replicate, he plugged in the copilot and sent you on your way.  Once the problem manifested itself you returned to the mechanic who downloaded the info to discover what had actually taken place.  The copilot is now in all vehicles and has been perfected to the point of remote control.  If you're not scared yet you should be.

Although today's systems are designed not to be disabled, it can be, let's say confused.

As we move around town with our cell phones in our vehicle, the cell tower that we are camped onto is recorded by the company.  This info can place you at the time and location of a crime, even though you did not make a call.  The evidence was just introduced in a murder trial in Chapel Hill, NC.  I think GPS data is also captured.  Ask Osama, he would know.  I think his phone has been disconnected and his insurance is cancelled also, even though he moved very slowly.

I do not have a clue if this is true or hogwash - I have heard several say that much of our computer traffic is routed thru. mega computers in Israel where it is not illegal there for their govt. to listen in. If they pick up something that fits a profile they inform our govt. Since most everything is on computers if true most of us live in a world where more is known about us than we can remember about ourselves.

No sir you can't.  You can only change it so that YOU can't use the locate features.  Your provider always has access, therefore any entity with the power to do so has that access.  Your phone location is always known and your personal use such as conversations, text and so on can easily be monitored.  Don't believe it because you read it here.  I'd bet there are folks in Gitmo right now that didn't believe it either.

A couple of links you guys might want to peruse.

One indicates correctly that the info from these devices has already been used to prosecute in court.

On the one hand, YOU own the data.  On the other hand YOU can't retrieve it, and the court can give the police a warrant to obtain it.

  Howdy Gentlemen:
Just a comment here. I have a z71,2003 chevy. I did not take the additional contract with On Star when my initial one ran out but, about 2 years after my contract expired, I was punching some of the buttons on the steering wheel and a voice came on and asked if I was involved in a wreck, I didn't answer her and she asked again, I told her no!
  What is that all about?
We are under constant survailence it seems.

I'm already aware of that.  They can tell which towers you are close to, but they can't tell exactly were the phone is if you fix your settings correctly.
