CANTON, Ohio—  The Canton Police officer who delivered two profanity-laden outbursts caught on tape by his on-board dash camera has been let go from the force.

Canton Police Chief Dean McKimm tells Fox 8 News that officer Daniel Harless is no longer employed with the city's police force.

According to Chief McKimm the decision to fire Harless came from the city's safety director, Thomas Ream, who issued a ruling on Harless' employment on Tuesday. The ruling came following an internal affairs investigation and disciplinary hearing. The hearing was held on December 15, 2011.

Ream stated in the ruling, "Drawing from my own background in law enforcement, I find that Ptl. Harless' actions were not a one-time breakdown of professionalism and training standards."

He went on to say, "It is quite clear that his actions represent a pattern of behavior where inappropriate verbal abuse and threat of death and great bodily harm of the various complainants occurred. This escalating pattern of potentially dangerous behavior cannot be justified or excused and clearly illustrated the seriousness of the departmental infractions."

Harless had come under fire for an arrest in June of 2011 where William Bartlett of Brewster, Ohio, was pulled over by Harless.

Bartlett, 52, was driving near the intersection of Tuscarawas and Newton Streets at 1:30 a.m. when he was stopped by officers.

An on-board dash camera recording of the incident captured Bartlett trying to tell Harless that he had a concealed carry weapon, but Harless interrupted Bartlett demanding he tell officers why he was in the area.

After being asked out of his vehicle by officers, Bartlett told Harless he was legally carrying a gun. What happened next was at the center of the safety director's investigation.

Harless was recorded launching into an immediate, angry, profanity-filled outburst, during which Bartlett was called a "stupid idiot" and "a dummy."

In November of last year, charges filed against Bartlett related to the incident where dismissed by Canton Municipal Judge Stephen Belden.

A second dash camera recording of a confrontation in July of 2011 involving Harless was provided to Fox 8 News after the first video surfaced.

In the July incident, the video shows Harless pulling over a pickup truck about 2:30 a.m. that was driven by James Adkins, 29, of Massillon.

I kind of feel for Mr Harless. Getting fired stings, really stings. Nobody is just one thing; we're all a mix. I don't know this, but I suspect Mr Harless has some virtues.

On the other side of the ledger... this happened six months ago. Despite what the article reports the prosecutor as saying - no evidence of any criminal wrongdoing? - I have a hard time believing that if I had behaved toward any citizen as Harless behaved toward the Mr Bartlett - while openly carrying a firearm? - I'd be in jail if the citizen made complaint. If I'd behaved toward a cop the way Harless behaved toward that that citizen, is there any doubt that I'd likely be dead? As for Harless... his wasn't just failure to perform his job well enough to keep it - his was abusive, criminal behavior. At least, for regular Americans. So far as I know, there haven't been any charges filed against him, he's not spent a day in jail.

Dont worry about ole Dan, he'll be on a police force somewhere. Those that act like him gravitate to the "force" and with reduced standards in many cities like atlanta, he'll be ok. It's the public that will have to worry.

I don't think that "ole Dan" will be doing any police work in the future.  Any agency, no matter how strapped it is for manpower, will think more than twice about hiring someone like Dan.  If they did, any such similar incident or an incident involving a shooting or excessive use of force will just make it an easy payday for the person suing the police force and/or political entity who hired him.

IMO, he'll have a hard time just doing unarmed security work.

Lets hope he is not able to get a job as a cop.  He still has a chance to be a Canton police officer, it is in appeal.

If I was the Canton Police Chief, and ex-Officer Harless wins the appeal, I would put him on the rubber gun squad.  No contact with the public.

There are thousands of rouge cops patrolling the streets of America. Perhaps a better mental stability test should be developed and used nation wide to help eliminate them from becoming cops.

If you ever watched the TV program “Cops,” then you should know abuse of the citizens is not isolated to one area, I won’t say some don’t need their chain jerked, but all citizens are not a threat and most don’t deserve the abuse from police. Another prime example of what I’m saying can be seen on the video on this site about the Austin, TX cop.  Every police force has it’s wannabe “RAMBO.” ANd yes, don't be susprised if ole Dan shows up on a force near you.

I cannot watch that show, as I cannot afford to buy new TVs to replace the ones that I shoot as I watched the Command Voice yelling and slamming people to the ground, and the patronizing commentary.

I love that show. I especially like the domestic squabbles.
