Dura-matic
« on: January 12, 2012, 06:49:22 PM »
Just purchased a JC Higgins Model 80 which is the High Standard Dura-matic.  Was wondering what the screw under the barrel is for ?????

Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about the barrel retaining thumb screw?   Here is a link to a good video on stripping a Dura-matic.

Don't drop it!  The plastic mag housings are about as rare as astatine and twice as expensive.  They are accurate though.  There is a push lever below the barrel forward of the top of the grip frame that can be used to quickly change between barrels.

I think that push button you mention was discontinued to the cheaper screw that he asked about.
Accurate, yes, we had two of them some 30yrs ago, and along with the other HS semi autos I had, were surprisingly accurate for what was a kit gun. I recognized the potential of that plastic grip/mag frame aging and getting brittle, so I sold them before it happened to me. I still see them around from time to time, still shooting good. As said, dont drop it and you will be OK.
