Police received a report of a stolen vehicle at around 8 a.m. near Rockford Lane and they say they were pursuing a white Chevy Cavalier until it crashed into a utility pole in front of the Holiday Inn.
"We were on it quickly but unfortunately two individuals died," Dwight Mitchell, LMPD, said.
Police tell WHAS11 the Cavalier was stolen from the owners, McCartney Mitchell and Ashley Hornback, just five miles from the accident scene.
Mitchell and Hornback tell us they feel horrible. They said they unusually leave their car on the street to warn up before heading to work.
"I usually start the car before I brush my teeth and put my contacts in and have five minutes to warm up. When I came back it was gone,"McCartney Mitchell and Ashley Hornback, the car owners, said.
Authorities say two males were ejected from the stolen car upon impact. One male died at the scene, the other male, a teenager, was taken to University Hospital.
A third person, a female pedestrian, was struck by the car and was killed.
"The lives being lost, that is alarming and we're more concerned about that,” Mitchell and Hornback said. “We've got a million thoughts."
No officers were injured in the accident, but the officer involved in the pursuit has been placed on leave until an investigation is complete.
The condition of the teenager taken to University Hospital is not known at this time. No identities have been released.
