Two dead, including one pedestrian, after police pursuit on Dixie Highway ends in crash        by Maureen Hagrman WHAS11.com Posted on January 13, 2012 at 8:23 AM
Updated today at 1:20 PM        Gallery  See all 13 photos »  LOUISVILLE, Ky (WHAS11) -- A police pursuit turns into a fatal accident, injuring three people, in the 4100 block of Dixie Highway near Watterson Expressway Friday morning.
Police received a report of a stolen vehicle at around 8 a.m. near Rockford Lane and they say they were pursuing a white Chevy Cavalier until it crashed into a utility pole in front of the Holiday Inn.
"We were on it quickly but unfortunately two individuals died," Dwight Mitchell, LMPD, said.
Police tell WHAS11 the Cavalier was stolen from the owners, McCartney Mitchell and Ashley Hornback, just five miles from the accident scene.
Mitchell and Hornback tell us they feel horrible. They said they unusually leave their car on the street to warn up before heading to work.
"I usually start the car before I brush my teeth and put my contacts in and have five minutes to warm up. When I came back it was gone,"McCartney Mitchell and Ashley Hornback, the car owners, said.

Authorities say two males were ejected from the stolen car upon impact. One male died at the scene, the other male, a teenager, was taken to University Hospital.
A third person, a female pedestrian, was struck by the car and was killed.
"The lives being lost, that is alarming and we're more concerned about that,” Mitchell and Hornback said. “We've got a million thoughts."
No officers were injured in the accident, but the officer involved in the pursuit has been placed on leave until an investigation is complete.
The condition of the teenager taken to University Hospital is not known at this time. No identities have been released.
Details are still coming in and we will bring you the latest as it becomes available.

I heard that on the radio. They are saying now the survivor from the car was the driver. I really hope he is old enough to get adult punishment.

We had a rash of crashes as a result of these a few years back.  They modified the procedure with respect to when they give high speed pursuit.  They also use the helicopters much more.

The couple who owned the car was on tv tonight and regretted that 2 people had needlessly died and hoped the 17 yr old punk who lived had learned a big lesson. I feel sorry for the owners and the pedestrian who was killed. Right now I feel nothing but anger for the 2 punks who did this. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(

The owners of the car must share responsibility. It is against the law in Louisville to leave a car unattended while it is running even if the doors are locked.

No stole car is worth an innocent life because a cop showing his azz and trying out his fast state car pushed the situation to this.

Yeah, he is just supposed to do the OJ slow chase thing and let them go if they outrun him since he is keeping to the speed limit!  The moral of this is not to leave a running car lying around.  A neighbor left his running while he went into a store and it was gone (surprise) when he returned.  It was found in a quarry where it was pushed over the edge. His insurance company did not pay for the loss, but at least nobody was injured or killed.

I know it was against the law but nobody made those punks steal it. I hope the owners are not charged. All that law did was make excuses for low life punks transferring blame from them to the victims.  POWDERMAN.  :o :o

And that's the bottom line.  If they didn't steal it none of this would have happened!

Everyone here has family, they are all over town, school, home and work. Why should a cop press two idiots that stole a car and not wanted in any other way to a "high speed chase" that endangers every man woman and child around them.  Get the cops around town out of the donut shops and tell them to watch out for the car until it stops and they are caught.

Yea, if the big bad cops would have just left the poor kids alone this whole thing would have never happened. If they would have gotten out of the donut shops and not chased the car and did there jobs the whole world would be safer. SO they are not doing there jobs because they are in a donut shop and when they leave the donut shop they shouldnt do anything but wait for the car to stop, wow, I am confused.

Each chase is different and should be treated accordingly. Lets leave the blame where it belongs with the idiots that decided to commit a felony, steal a car, get into a high speed, killed a ped. and his own friend, and put himself in the hospital all choices the moron made himself. He could have: NOT stole the car, Pulled over and NOT started to run all choices one moron made no one forced him into anything now many have to suffer because of his choices.

How do you know the "two idiots that stole a car" are not wanted for anything else?

I'm sure that you would want the cops to "watch out for the car until it stops and they are caught",  especially if it was your car, right?  And how would they catch the thieves if they don't chase them?
I can just see it now;
you - pointing at your car driving away.  "Officer those guys just stole my car",
the cops - "We were told to just watch out for the car until it stops, their still moving."
you - "You @#$%& lazy cops, chase them, do your job, and get my car back!"
the cops - "Sorry sir, we can't do anything until their caught!"
you - "And who is going to catch them you idiots!"

You can't have it both ways.
"You are entitled to your own opinions, but you are not entitled to your own facts." - Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan

If the car had not been left running unattended, the opportunity to steal it easily would not have been there.

I agree, but because they left it running it didnt force them to do anything they wouldnt have done anyway.
I have seen many cars left running, you know how many of them I was forced to steal? ZERO. It just made it easier for a thief to work his magic.

Lots of people in the country dont lock their doors, so does that mean if they get a theft from their home it is not the thieves fault? Glass windows break so if you lock your doors is your home really secure? or is it our faults for not having bars on our windows and doors.

A thief is a thief regardless of what the property owner has done to make it easier, blame the thief. Its like blaming a rape victim for looking to good. Lots of beautiful woman out in the world do they all deserve to be raped.

I know off topic, point is blame the offender of the crime not the victim. Teach the victim how not to be a victim again.

Had the thieves not been thieves the innocent and one of the thieves would still been alive.

Go to Safeway here in North Pole and almost every vehicle in the parking lot will be running.  Some locked and some not.  Some with keys inside, some running on their autostart with no key inside.  Same thing all over Fairbanks right now as well.

The owners are not to blame, the cop is not to blame.  All the blame goes to the thief, the driver, total 100%.

1.  It was not his vehicle, why did he drive off with it?
2.  Why did he not stop when the cop started persuit?

Again the driver is to blame totally 100%, no one else.

When they stop driving the stolen car. Will they just set beside and wait for the police to handcuff them? Crap they have been doing the chasing thing for nothing.

The story say's they stole a Chevy Cavalier, that tells me they were D A 'es of the highest order. Little reason to steal a car that you couldn't even sell with a clear title. Bet a dollar to a doughnut they were joy riding. When it ran outta gas they would have trashed it as best they could then walk away Cops were chasing cause that's what cops do, D A 'es were running cause thats what D A'es do. Neither can help themselves, now two folks are dead, one senselessly.

Horsepatoot. The cars owner did not stand over those punks and make them steal, they did it because thats what punks do. I hope the car owner is not charged with breaking the law, but I'm betting he will be. I hope the surviving punk is found guilty of murder and executed immediately. Stupid laws like this are not made to help anybody but the thief involved, to pass blame to the victim. It was 15 deg when I started my car this morning and came in the house, finished my coffee and let it warm up. Liberals are great at passing the blame on the victims. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(

Understand it was the driver that survived.  He should be brought up on murder charges.  He killed the pedestrian.
