Do any of you use or know about Magic Jack?
« on: January 13, 2012, 05:51:39 PM »
Do any of you use or know about Magic Jack? It is phone service through your computer. It cost like $19.95 a year. It plugs into the USB port on your computer. Here is my question. The trailer park I am staying in has free WIFI and I use my lap top computer to connect to the Internet. I want to know since it plugs in to the USB port on my computer can I use it to get phone service? Thanks and take care Dale

Can't answer that with certainty but don't see why not.

Mine is hooked to my back up computer as you say via the internet port. It works just like my land line phone does. I use it almost exclusively for long distance calls that aren't toll free. I have AT&T land line and they charge fifty cents to as much as a dollar a minute for long distance calls.

I've thought about dropping them and did once but just when I did I lost internet for awhile and had no phone to report it. I believe it fair to compare Magic Jack to Vonage. Both are internet based with no LD charges at least not in the US. Vonage wants as much per month as MJ does per year. I signed up for five years and got a price cut.

I don't see why it would matter how you get your internet so long as you have it and it's high speed.

Thanks GB thats what I kind of figured but wanted to check prior to buying one. I think I might just give it a try. I guess it would plug into my USB port then there must be an out let for the phone to plug into that. Thanks Dale

My brother was saying that due to some new laws you can now keep your old phone number.  I'm not sure if that's true.

I believe you can keep numbers with different providers but MJ just generates Numbers as you sign-up
they can't control them
Thats the way I understood them they did say they were working on it,Maybe they did??

Yes, as long as you have high speed internet and a decent WIFI signal you can hook up to your lap top. My wife used it that way for a buiseness phone. As far as phone numbers you can use any number you choose. Magic Jack also makes a cheap pocket sized phone that works just with it. Wal Mart has them for around $10. You have to make sure what ever phone you use is compatible with the Magic Jack or it won't ring. Go to their sight and they have a 30 day free trial. If you like it you pay the $39.95, if not send it back and pay nothing. The first year's service is free.

No a Fax machine won't work with it. It's only for phone service.

Really? My apology, I stand corrected. :) That's what I get for asking my wife. ;) Must have been a glitch on our end that wouldn't allow her to. Wonder if it could have something to do with your cable provider or type of hook up? Then too, we got our Magic Jack when it first came out. Could be they made some upgrades. Anyhow, she tried her Fax Machine and it wouldn't work with it. I know there's some phones that don't work right with it. They won't ring when you get a call. That might apply to Fax Machines too, some simply might not be compatible.

Yes the Wi-Fi connection will work if its strong enough.

Did you know that Magic Jack prices are going up this January from $19.95 to $29.95 a year.

I have a 1 1/2 years left for my Magic Jack and I am going to get the new Magic Jack Plus which doesn't need to be connected to a turned on computer, but to a ethernet cable router and/or modem.
