Some thing of note during extreame cold. 40 below or colder
« on: January 14, 2012, 01:14:20 PM »
Every year we get a fresh batch of new people that do not understand the cold.  I've seen temps down to 80 below, and had to work outside at those temps.  Somethings of interest we try and tell them.
1.  The hood on a parka will zip all the way up till only a small tunnel is left to look through.  At 50 below or colder use it, otherwise you will freeze your lungs.
2.  Don't run, if you fall odds are you will not be able to get up, and you can freeze to death in a matter of minutes.  Also the rapid breathing will freeze your lungs.
3.  Don't drink alcohol that has been left outside.  That swallow of everclera will still be 50 below as it goes down your throat, you will be dead in 3 minutes.
4.  If you can get your vehicle started, don't try and force it to move once in gear, the tires may be frozen to the ground or pavement.  Hitting the gas can rip chunks out of the tires causing four instant flats.
5.  You will have tires with four flat spots till they warm up enough to round out.  Rounding out may not occur if the temps are low enough.
6.  Don't cross the railroad tracks going fast.  You will knock the tires off the beads, and roll the tires off the wheels.  It's embarressing to arrive home on only wheels.
7.  Don't walk out in front of traffic expecting it to stop, odds are they can not see you through the ice fog.
8.  Don't touch metal with your bare hand, it's like grabbing a red hot poker.  You will scream, and your hand will hurt for days.  Maybe even blister up.
9.  Don't open a window at home or in your vehicle, you won't be able to get it closed.
10.  Don't wear wire framed glasses, you will frost bits your skin along your temples.
11.  Don't wear contacts, they can freeze to your eye.
12.  When driving and you come to a lighted intersection, you have the green light, always slow and look both ways.  The other driver may suddenly have no brakes.
13.  Never ever use you  emergency (parking) brake, unless you regular brakes don't work.  That's what they are for, not parking.  Use to park will get your vehicle will be stuck there till it can be towed to a warm storage and the brakes thawed.  There is a layer of ice on the entire mechanisum, you engage them and they won't release.
14.  Make sure your parka ruff is real fur.  Fake fur will not work.  First time it is touched it will brake off, leaving your face with no protection.
15.  Wear wool or poly undergarments, cotton kills.
16.  Do not do anything that will make you sweat, that can kill you when it freezes.
17.  Wear mittens, not gloves.  Gloves can cost you your fingers.
18.  When outside for extended periods, realize your mental capacity is deminished.  You can not always think straight and can do something very wrong.  One mistake and you can be dead.
19.  Don't try and shoot a gun, they don't always work.

Just to reinforce this information.  There was an old man who brought in a bottle of Everclear that he had been hiding outside during my wedding reception.  He brought it inside and took a big swig.  He was dead before we could get him into the car.

A young military woman who worked for the fire dept took a drive one evening out into the bush.  When she parked her car, she pulled up the parking brake.  She went for a short hike.  The temps were around Zero when she left her car.  When she returned the temps were dropping.  After starting her car, the car would not move.  The parking brake would not release.  She decided to walk out, but she was not dressed for temps colder than 20 below.  They found her car the next day, it was 60 below.  They found her remains in the spring.

One night the temp dropped from 10 below to 65 below.  A crew was working the midnight shift at one of the hangers on Eielson AFB.  One of the young men ran a cord out to his big Ford truck to make sure it would start in the morning.   Truck was jacked up with huge wheels, and all the off road accessories imaginable.  Next morning he went out at 65 below and started his truck.  He let it run for over 30 minutes to assure it would run properly.  When he got off shift he went out and jumped into a still cold truck.  Put it into gear and hit the gas.  Truck just shuddered and sat there.  Driver reached down and slipped it into four wheel drive/low range.  Floored the throttle, truck jumped ahead.  After about 20 to 30 yards he realized something was wrong.  Got out and saw every wheel was missing it's tire.  The tires were still back where they had frozen to the ground, or lying his along the track.

SOURDOUGH. Thanks, all good advice. Coldest I've ever been outside in was 28 below in ILL, 26 below rt here in KY. As bad as that was I can't even envision temps like what you have there. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Not trying to be droll, but I'm seriously curious.  If you have to be out in severe cold is taking a leak even possible?  I can't imagine it being worth the possible danger.  Like PM the coldest I've experienced is -20 something.

OldSyko:  It's possiable, but there is issues.  Getting through all those layers of clothing.

Neighbor called last week when it was 30 below and wanted me to go shooting with him.  I went just so he would not be out there alone.  I sat in the truck and watched.  Russ got out and threw a piece of carpet on the ground to lie on.  His 300 Win Mag and shells had been in the bed of the truck.  Russ laid down and taking out one cartridge loaded the gun.  His target from last shooting session was still in place at 300 yards.  I watched through the spotting scope as Russ took his first shot.  I saw flames and fire reach out a third of the way to the target.  The bullet only went two thirds of the way out to the target.  Looks like most of the powder did not burn till it was outside the barrel.  Sure lite up our world.  Russ decided to call it a day and we went home to warm up.

I've seen what happens to a cup of warm water when flung into the air so was just curious.  The physical aspect of getting into position would be an issue to itself. ;D

When I first came to Alaska, we had an Airman that worked at the Sewage Plant living on my floor of the dorm, (Barracks to the rest of you military guys).  He had an aversion to the showers it seemed.  The guys in the dorm on the third floor did not like him too much.  Every time someone saw him get off the shuttle bus and head for the front door, they would throw a can or small bucket of cold water down at him.  The water would freeze instantly, and pelt him with sharp icicles.  After a week of this he got cautious and they were not able to catch him anymore, so they gave it up.  Then after several weeks, he got complacent again.

One Saturday morning it was severly cold.  He was rushing to the front door.  A bunch of guys were hanging out the latrine window, each with a bucket of hot water.  Someone called his name, and as he looked up they threw the buckets of water.  This guy seeing all that water and expecting enough sharp icicles to really hurt him this time, panicked.  He tried to turn around and fell on his back.  There he was lying on his back and trying to move on the ice.  Screaming his head off in total panic.  Meanwhile all that warm water vaporized, and just hung there above him as a big frozen fog.  Once he realized he was not going to be hurt, he got mad and here he came.

Big mistake, the guys had been waiting for an excuse to give him a GI Shower, using that old GI scouring powder, and those GI scrub brushes.  You non GIs won't understand that.  Once those guys had finished he was totally new born pink.  In no uncertain terms he was told he would shower every day after that.  From that point on if someone suggested a shower, he was there real fast.

OK, for you non GI types.  Think of the big brushes you use to clean the wheels of your car, then think of using Comet cleanser, and you are close enough for government work.

Well I don`t know how urinating at 40 below would be, but some years ago was in North Park, Colorado elk hunting and went out of the cabin late at night and went back of the cabin to take a leak where the back yard ended and a 200 foot cliff began. The moon was bright and it was well below 0 as there was ice crystals just floating around sparkling in the moonlight. When I started to urinate the pee just went over the cliff and immediately crystalized in the air!

I once did work for an ice cream company, on the lift truck they used in the hardening room.  60 below there.  I was instructed about bare skin on metal, etc. and keeping all my body covered.  Then one of the guys told me that if I had to pee, to hold it.  If I made a mistake with my glove off and touched something, I might need the pee to get loose.  I never had to try, thank goodness! :o

Syco, if you spent a lot of time in food processing places, you might give up "store bought" food altogether.  I could tell lots of stories but nothing would change and you might be afraid to eat again!

I moved here to Mn. from central Il. and have discovered a few of your real cold weather oddities. The stuff like breathing hard comes pretty quickly as there is immediate pain or what I like to call lung lock, then the next day you have pneumonia like symptoms if you did not heed the lung lock warnings.
Sticking your hand down in a bucket of anti-freeze is one of those only do it once items too. A person is not programed to understand liquids will get colder than 32 degrees, suffice to say -15 air is down right balmy compared to -15 liquids.
Door latches that don't in cold weather, shocks with no give at all, plastic parts that would just as soon shatter as not, ICE FOG :o :o  now that crap is something else, not sure how it freezes to a vehicle immediately being as how it is -15 and surely its frozen already and ought to blow off like snow but it sure doesn't, dangerous stuff.

Best of all is how your boots turn to big ol' chunks of wood on the ends of your legs, like straping 2X4's to your feet.

On the good side, the ice and snow get to the point they really aren't too slick. The lakes are fit to drive on, your Suburban is much nicer than a bass boat, really. No mud, no salt on the road (would not work anyway), and the snow just blows off after a few cars go by.

yea, it's 50 below, but the raod to Fairbanks is solid dry pavement.  Not so the roads around North Pole.  Not as heavily traveled as the main highway.  The street in front of my house has about 4" of hardpack on it.  Just as sticky as dry pavement, till spring.  Sky went into Fairbanks today, he said with the ice fog the visibility is down to about 15 to 20 yards.  Tomorrow will be much worse, since it got colder tonight.

Ben

I have!  And store bought food is very limited for us.  I've seen 500# of hamburger dumped in 3 inches of water in the floor of a cooler, picked up, run through the grinder again and packaged for sale.  You don't want to hear what I've seen in in a chicken processing plant.   :(

It's been around +15 here the last 2 mornings and in the mid 20s during the day with very light blowing snow and that is bad enough for me.  I wish they had all the salt and cinders shoved where the sun doesn't shine.  It does nothing but make a mess and destroy equipment.  The only thing it does is make the stupid city dwellers think they are getting attention.  If they would just leave things alone the roads would clear themselves around here, at least until we got a real snow.

After reading all the replies and situations of cold weather, what temps do you keep the dwellings in Alaska? I know that after going out and doing some stomping in the woods around here at the 0 to 20 marks, when I get back in the house I get the "pins and needles" syndrome, can't get out of the gear fast enough. I keep the house around 68 most of the time.

The main thing I learned about Alaska while I was up there is that I never, never want to go back.  I don't know which is worse--the cold, or the dark.

I looked out the window this morning and found that it had snowed a little last night.  This had better not last, or I'm heading for Arizona.  What happened to all that global warming?

50 below was pretty common when I lived in Tok. We parked our vehicles in a parking lot that was packed snow all winter. Most cold mornings when you started out the front wheels wouldn't roll. Had to jockey around a while before they started turning so you could steer.

bilmac caused me to think of something else.  Say it's fifty or sixty below, you head down the highway.  After 15 to 20 minutes your tires round out, things are going smooth so you gradually speed up to highway speed.  You are out between Say Delta and Fairbanks so you don't encounter Ice Fog so you can run at 55 to 65 mph.  Everything going great, your vehicle has finally started to warm up a little.  Here comes the Railroad tracks Between Eielson and North Pole.  Real smooth crossing so you hit it doing 55mph.  Bang the vehicle droops on one side.  You limp on into Fairbanks, cause it's too cold to stop and check it out.  You take it to a shop and discover you have broken at least one shock, maybe even a spring, as well.

bilmac:  I remember those days, when the car makers did not use an Arctic rated grease in the front wheel bearings.  We got in a bunch of new Dodge Six Packs, (Crew Cabs) and everyone wanted one for their shop.  They did not want to wait for the Motor Pool to go over them.  My having to go out 15 miles to the transmitter site every night, I was one that really needed one.  Luckily I was given an old Two Ton truck, with 4 wheel drive.  Temps dropped to 60 below, I had to go rescue the drivers of those new Dodges.  Often times there would be four to six men in the truck when I got there.  I only had a standard cab, with one bench seat.  Those guys would find a way of getting everyone in.  The grease used in the front ends got so stiff the wheels would not go round, and they had all gone into ditches or into other vehicles.  The old vehicle they gave me had been gone over by the motor pool and the grease changed.

I think you left out point 20: Don't live someplace where it gets to be -40F. That seems to logically follow from the previous 19.

Like my first wife's mother always said when asked why she lived here.  "Ah, the summers make up for it".  Lately we have only had a few weeks of really nasty weather, seldom getting lower than -30, and people tend to forget what real cold -60 to -70 is like.  But we do get reminded from time to time.

Well this morning I got up and took my little dog for a walk. I put a knit cap on and a jacaket.
Found my old gloves and out we went. My little dog broke through the cat ice on a puddle and got his feet wet. Fortunately it was only 35 degrees, oh yes I mean above 0. ;D
I just can't imagine them really cold Alaskan days but love to hear about them.

The coldest I've ever seen was when I lived  up on the mountain in Pa. It was about 18 years ago and it got down to 26 below with out the wind chill for a couple nights. If you did not go out and start the car every couple hours and let it warm up you could forget about trying to start it in the morning. I lived in a little 10x50 trailer with 2x2's for studs in the walls. You could not get much insulation in them walls because of it. I heated that tailer that winter with a little kerosene heater and a small electric heater. I had them both going wide open and you could still see your breath in my trailer. I honest to God thought In might freeze to death that winter. That was the worst one I ever saw up there and that 26 below set a record for it being the coldest ever recorded up until then. Dale

No thanks....... Spokane was bad enough to suit me. I seriously thought about a remote assignment to Ak, then came to my senses.
