turkey hunting
« on: January 14, 2012, 04:48:02 PM »
I know its early. Next deer season is too far away so I want to try something new. Got some gear for Christmas. Ive been practicing calling. Now I need to find a place to go. Anyone know of any good public land for turkeys. Any advise is welcome. Thanks.

Where are You in Ohio? Practically all the counties along the Ohio river are overrun with turkeys. Wayne National Forest is in several of the counties and is intermixed with farms. If you can't get permission on the private grounds, attain a DNR or topo map of an area and hunt next to the farms. I live in Mason Co in WV which is on the river and I work on a tug boat. I can hear them all the time in the spring. I have seen them regularly on the grounds around the locks and dams also.

Where I live in Mason Co, there are practically turkeys on every hill. One farm I hunt has a shed for feeding cattle round bales and I'll sit under it and watch them walk by and look at the spurs looking for the big one. Shot a couple dandys there. 1 5/8" x 27lbs

Don't bother with the north end of the Zaleski state forest as I deer hunt there every year and haven't seen a turkey (or grouse for that matter) since 2002 or 2003.    The woods are overrun with coyotes.
