Early Spring?
« on: January 15, 2012, 08:13:00 AM »
Blue birds on the tractor, 2 pair.

2 large flocks of Grackles flew over.

You guys thinking we're gonna have an early spring?

Hmm.  That is a bit early for SC.

When I was in N GA I remember early Feb as the time for daffodils.

Seeing a lot of substantial tree budding here.  Maybe a month to 6 weeks early?

Its been very mild here in North Texas this winter.  When compared to the last couple of winters...I actually feel cheated like I havent got the total package!  But alas this is Texas and it aint over till the fat lady sings and potentially it could be ugly here up til the middle of March.  But we have only had a hand full of days where the temperture dropped enough for a mild freeze and we have had a lot of winter days over 60 degrees including several up to 70!  Now thats just crazy insaine.  So while I am going to start some of my Garden plants indoors in the next couple of weeks, I am going to hold off on placing any bets.  I just hope we dont have another brutally hot summer!!!

Agreed on summer.  It would be nice to have a longer spring this year.
I saw some early flowers pushing up through the ground on Thur or Fri.
Looked like daffodil.

Feb and March can sure act up though.
No telling what will happen between now and spring turkey season.

We will end up getting a hard freeze and snow late spring and end up with no fruit this year.

Daffodils have been up a week or more, I brought one in the house yesterday with a big bloom starting to see if it will open. Most trees are budding. Apple, peach, and pear trees got new leaves in Dec, gone now. Lots of rain, pond full. I saw a bunch of robins last week. Now, if I could just find a mushroom. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Same here in VT. Very mild winter. NO snow for most of the winter. Snowmobilers are bummed out. Only riding is up in the Northeast Kingdom.

Have had 3 & 4 pairs of bluebirds all winter around their houses & feeding on the sumac buds. Robins have been back on our bare lawn most of January & all this month. This has been a good year for our deer herds, compared to last years record snow falls.

In all my 64+ years here in VT can't ever remember having bare ground for most of the winter. But I'm afraid we are going to pay for this mild winter come spring time.

Just hoping that all my fruit trees don't decide to bud early. Also afraid that our maple sugaring season may be very short.

Fella here in KY taps the hard maples.  He said that the year is really off for sap so far.  His yield is down.

my blueberries are trying to bud out, and this weekend they are calling for low temps around 16.  Looks like I will lose any berries they would have produced this year...
I will post crop production when I have something to report...

Daffodils blooming, surprise lilys up, as well as tulips. Fruit trees all budded too, robins everywhere. Only had an in or so snow all winter. Grass has actually grown since cut last fall. Only had 2 nites down to 15 deg. Last week I pulled some perfectly good turnips from the garden and they were good, tops still mostly green. Gonna be a lot of bugs next summer. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

yup, we're having our second snow fall here, still waiting for a measurable snow fall, and the temps have yet to freeze the ground.  I do not normally spray for bugs until they start being a problem, this year I am planning two preventative sprayings in hopes of having some level of control.

my blueberries have me concerned, they had formed buds already and some were swelling like they would open any day, now temps are in the teens at night and 40's during the daytime.  Rose bushes and early spring flowers are also taking a beating from the late freezing.
