Italian ship crash

Haven't caught up with the details of the story, but have seen it compared to the Titanic. Beg to differ on that point. Too many differences to seriously debate the issue.

But the reason I make the post is that it seems like a harbor pilot should have had responsibility for the helm at that point. Was there?

I wonder if this is going to be the textbook case of a datum error.

I was the assistant navigator aboard an old diesel electric submarine in 1967, 1968. Todays small boats have more sophisticated navigational devices than we had back then. For a modern cruise ship to go aground is a result of an incredible derelection of duty.

 I heard the Capitan abandoned ship and is now being held
It was said he told the passengers every man for himself and got aboard a
 lifeboat and left the ship

The Costa Concordia’s captain was blamed for the disaster by his company last night as passengers told how he was parading around a bar with a glamorous woman shortly before the liner hit rocks.
Francesco Schettino, 52, is also alleged to have abandoned ship before all those on board were safe.
The boat’s owners, Costa Cruises, said in a statement last night: “Preliminary indications are there may have been significant human error on the part of the ship’s Master, Captain Francesco ­Schettino, which resulted in these grave consequences.
    The route of the vessel appears to have been too close to the shore, and the captain’s judgment in handling the ­emergency appears to have not followed standard Costa procedures.”

It amazes me how little reporters know about real life. I heard a Fox news reader say tonight that the boat hit EITHER  a rock OR a reef. The story must have had at least a writer then some sort of editor and then the gal who read it and probably more people than that see that line yet nobody understood that a rock and a reef are pretty much the same thing. :'(

I went to the BBC News web site.  They showed the pictures of the gash on the bottom of the ship.  One photo shows a large chunk of rock stuck in the hole.  The hole in the ship is massive.  No wonder it settled to the bottom so fast.  He was very close to the shore, with rocks everywhere around the ship.

Too much conflicting info on this now. Captain is responsible for vessel, but cause is still unknown.

The news this morning is saying the ship's captain was making a close pass at the island to cause a big wake to splash ashore, because he has a friend on the island.  What's it sound like when a dago ship goes aground--WOP!

Here is a supposed transcript between the captain and the coast guard:


Coast Guard: Hello.

Captain: Good evening, chief.

Coast Guard: Listen, this is De Falco from Livorno. Am I speaking with the captain?

Captain: Good evening, Chief De Falco.

Coast Guard: Tell me your name, please.

Captain: I am Captain Schettino, chief.

Coast Guard: Schettino?

Captain: Yes.

Coast Guard: Listen, Schettino. There are people trapped on board. Now, you go with your lifeboat. Under the bow of the ship, on the right side, there is a ladder. You climb on that ladder and go on board the ship. Go on board the ship and get back to me and tell me how many people are there. Is that clear. I am recording this conversation, Captain Schettino.

(Captain tries to speak but Coast Guard can't hear him clearly. Voices in the Coast Guard room.)

Coast Guard: Speak up! (captain tries to speak) Captain, put your hand over the microphone and speak in a louder voice!

Captain: At this moment the ship is listing.

Coast Guard: There are people who are coming down the ladder on the bow. Go back in the opposite direction, get back on the ship, and tell me how many people there are and what they have on board. Tell me if there are children, women and what type of help they need. And you tell me the number of each of these categories. Is that clear?

Listen Schettino, perhaps you have saved yourself from the sea but I will make you look very bad. I will make you pay for this. Dammit, go back on board!

(Noise can be heard in the background. Apparently other Coast Guard officers are shouting to each other in the same room about "the ship, the ship")

Captain: Please ...

Coast Guard: There is no 'please' about it. Get back on board. Assure me you are going back on board!

Captain: I'm in a lifeboat, I am under here. I am not going anywhere. I am here.

Coast Guard: What are you doing, captain?

Captain: I am here to coordinate the rescue...

Coast Guard (interrupting): What are you coordinating there! Get on board! Coordinate the rescue from on board! Are you refusing?

Captain: No, I am not refusing.

Coast Guard: Are you refusing to go aboard, captain? Tell me the reason why you are not going back on board.

Captain: (inaudible)... there is a another lifeboat...

Coast Guard (interrupting, yelling): You get back on board! That is an order! There is nothing else for you to consider. You have sounded the "Abandon Ship." Now I am giving the orders. Get back on board. Is that clear? Don't you hear me?

Captain: I am going aboard.

Coast Guard: Go! Call me immediately when you are on board. My rescue people are in front of the bow.

Captain: Where is your rescue craft?

Coast Guard: My rescue craft is at the bow. Go! There are already bodies, Schettino. Go!

Captain: How many bodies are there?

Coast Guard: I don't know! ... Christ, you should be the one telling me that!

Captain: Do you realize that it is dark and we can't see anything?

Coast Guard: So, what do you want to do, to go home, Schettino?! It's dark and you want to go home? Go to the bow of the ship where the ladder is and tell me what needs to be done, how many people there are, and what they need! Now!

Captain: My second in command is here with me.

Coast Guard: Then both of you go! Both of you! What is the name of your second in command?

Captain: His name is Dmitri (static)"

Coast Guard: What is the rest of his name? (static) You and your second in command get on board now! Is that clear?

Captain: Look, chief, I want to go aboard but the other lifeboat here has stopped and is drifting. I have called ...

Coast Guard (interrupting): You have been telling me this for an hour! Now, go aboard! Get on board, and tell me immediately how many people there are!

Captain: OK, chief.

I heard that the OOD was busy texting his boyfriend, and didn't listen to the lookouts (a la Captain Queeg and the target sled)

If I understand the duties/responsibilities of a harbor pilot correctly, a harbor pilot would not have been on the Costa Concordia, since it was not in the process of docking in a port/harbor.  The Captain of the ship is responsible for the navigation of the the ship until it enters a port.

Maybe YT3, or one of the other ex-navy guys could answer this question in more detail.

With the cruise ship business expanding at a rapid rate, maybe competent captains are hard to come by. Instead people are hired that have no business steering a canoe, let alone a cruise liner loaded with a few thousand people.

WOP, means without papers. Many Italian and other immigrants did not have the proper papers to immediately enter the US, so they were marked WOP in chalk, and routed to different areas for processing. The term is considered derogatory by many of Italian heritage.
My Italian grandparents both had passports, but still were subject to scorn, as I was as a youth, even though my parents were born here in the US.
At any rate, I took your comment as a joke, but darn it, please throw in a smiley face, dude.  No harm done.   ;)
