Is anyone in New England using their pistols for coyote hunting? and if so what caliber and at what range?

I'm on the left coast and I use a 10" .222 w/50 grain Nosler b/t's out to 200 yards. Mike 8)

What is the hand felt recoil like with the .223. I am trying to decide between .17HMR or .223 Thanks.

>17 HMR has no noticeable recoil---that is I can see impact on the target through the scope on my 11 inch Bullberry barrel-----Can't quite say the same for my 14 inch .223 T/C barrel, but still very litttle felt recoil---I'm using Pachmyr Decellerator grip and forend on my Contender frame--- not specifically for these calibers, but for my 338 JDJ barrel and felt recoil is very tolerable even then---- grips probably won't matter with .17 HMR-----pg

The barrel I was looking at is a 14 inch 1 in 10 twist in the .17 HMR, will the 4 inch longer barrel make a difference. I have a Savage .223 and may just stay with that if the .17 is that weak. I am only going to be shooting at 25 to 50 yards. I appreciate all of your imput.

The .17 is a GREAT cartridge, but I don't think coyote-size game was on the menu when it was designed.  It is a much easier cartridge to hit with out to 200 yards than the .22 Mag, but I don't think it's appropriate for that large an animal.  I woldn't take it fox hunting as a first choice, let alone coyotes.  I know that you can kill just about anything with anything if the planets and starts are in perfect alignment with perfect shot placement, but that doesn't exactly make it a good idea.

The 223 would be your best bet. I have a 10" 17hmr, You have to place your shot just right to stop a groundhog quickly. Not sure if I would ever try a coyote with it.
 
   I use a 14" 375 winchester, stops em right quick.

I really like my 221 fireball barrel for hunting coyotes. I think this is the perfect chambering for a 10" barrel. dave
