Books- Good Reads.

A while ago I purchased Hunter By JA Hunter about his life as a big game hunter and professional guide in Africa.
Over Christmas this year I finally broke the spine on it on my flights.  And catching 15 to 20 min of reading at lunch.
Great book, interesting.  Well written and I can see a lot of similar stories in the Death in.... Books by Capstick.
I Have finally found a copy of Maneaters by Capstick, closing out my collection from him and am starting it tomorrow with Maneaters and Marauders by Taylor to follow.  Both were a gift card from my parents to Amazon.  I can not bring my self to buy a Kindel.  And when looking for authors in the E-books I found these books and bought.
Any one have a book they read lately and liked?

I have read Maneaters, and it is not very good. it doesn't have the polish of the more  well known Capstick books.


Try Pioneering Handgun Hunting by Al Goerg. Hard to find, but excellent.


If you like to read, you will eventually have a Kindle or something like it. I use something like it and prefer it to paper books.

For the most part I like the look of hardcovers in the book shelves especally books I will read again or referance.
For the trash novels I read I can see the kindle.  But the idea of the kindle is to have it for trips, and the first thing they tell you is to turn it off for the first and last  20 Min of a flight.
Also looking at the price fo the E-books going up and up, if I have a hard cover I can sell it.  As far as I understand I can only lend or borrow an E-book for a short time.

A little off topic, but what happened the "books" thread.  Is it because it wasn't being used enough, or did it get combined with another topic?  I use to like the recommendations and synopsis by other posters of good reads.

I have read several books lately that I consider very good.  One book in particuler should be mandatory reading for every school kid in Alaska.  "ALASKA'S WOLF MAN", The life and times of Frank Glasser.  Another on was written by Larry Kaniut, "Alaskan Bear Tales, a book cimpiled from the people that had the experiences.
 
There is several more, but I can not remember the title and author at this time.  Maybe tomorrow I can look them up.  Rog

Arctic Dreams by Barry Lopez is one of the best books I have read. Its about the arctic, its places, animals, natural history and people. Truly excellent.

A few weeks before Christmas of '10 my wife asked if I would like to have a Kindle. My answer was "no, no way, forget it, don't want one". I got one anyway because the kids had already bought it. I decided to give it a try since it was there. My, my, was I ever wrong with a first opinion. I love this thing. If you like to read all I can say is to get one. My wife got one for Christmas this year and she has read more since she received it than she read all of last year.
 
There are millions of books available, over 2 million free ones, on line.

That's funny because that's similar to my reaction. I thought I'd never give up on paper books, and I still use them. But if there's a kindle version, I always prefer it. One of the best things to happen to reading since the printing press.

OK,
Let me get through the couple I have lined up and I will get an E-book reader.  My Step monster has one and loves it.  She would take two paper backs a day on the train, one into the City and one on the way home.  She is always down loading the deal of the day books.  And I can get the magazines I read on it as well.  My Copies of Double gun Journal are starting to fill up a whole book case.

Unfortunately, you probably shouldn't just go out and buy something. They all are different and have relative advantages and disadvantages. Kindle is best known because it's tied to Amazon. The best overall is the iPad because it's a great computer and tremendously useful device, but costs a lot more and requires more frequent charging. Among the e-readers, there's the decision of whether to get color or digital ink. digital ink goes a long time between recharges. iPad is about 10 hours. Not sure what the color Nook or Kindle need for power.
 
I'd say put this one your radar screen and see which one seems to fit your usage patterns best.

I've had my Kindle for about a year and a half now, I wish I had it 35 years ago.
We just moved to town and I had to move several thousand books.
It I'd had a e-book back then it would not have been the chore it was now.
 
As for reading I don't notice much difference, I'm not one who needs to feel the paper.
I can tot several books on trips without any hassle.
I've downloaded a couple hundred free books off Amazon.
And I've bought a bunch also.
 
I don't know if an e-reader is for anyone else.
I just know I like mine plenty.

Thanks,  The rest of the Family is using the Kindle.  But am still not sold on it.  I had a PDA way back when and it is still kind of new.  Never really go into the whole digital thing.  My Super cell phone has an appointment feature and I still carry a printed book.

Thanks for the Bear Tales title.
I have a freind headed your way in the spring for a Brown bear hunt at one of his customers gold mine.  I think a book about real life bear encounters may help him.  He tends to charge into things thinking the people around him will be able ot bail him out.  And he thinks many of his friends are like the Professional hunters of Africa and will beable to stop a charge. Oh and he was good with a rifle at one point but does not shoot a lot so his skills have disapeared.

If you have an iphone I believe there is a kindle app for it where you can read them off it.
Only problem is the dang screen is so small.  :o

Best thing I like about the Kindle is it's weight. I read either a Daily Bible or a Yearly Bible every morning before I get out of bed. Both were paperbacks and were wore out. So for this year I bought a Kindle version. What a difference reading the flyweight Kindle as opposed to the big heavy paperback especially when they are floppy worn and you are reading at the very end of the book.

One thing I don't much care for is they don't make good reference books. I bought a good gardening book and there is a lot of good reference stuff I want to go back to, but flipping through the pages of a Kindle is a real pain. Some of my bird books that I bought in college I can find what I want almost immediately because I know where to open the book to.

mcwoodduck:  I will be honest, "Alaska, Bear Tales", has made a few people so paranoid they will not go camping or hiking away from town.  One couple we run with, the wife is constantly looking for Bears, and if she sees one she is approaching panic mode.

Have to admit, for a few weeks after reading it I was a bit up tight.  Really causes one to realize you are not invincable.  I still carry a single shot 30-06, not a BAR in .338, while in the woods.

Forgot to mention a book. "Murder in the Gun Room" is a good read for the collectors out there. The author is a guy who actually knows what he writes about. By the way, it is free on your Kindle.

If you like Lewis and Clarks corp of discovery, you need to read Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose (he also wrote Band of Brothers).

I have the six dvd set of Band of Brothers, and I just finished reading the book a couple of weeks ago. I liked the book. The story of Easy company is a good story. I'll have to get Undaunted Courage. I liked the way Ambrose did Band of Brothers.
