Black Eyed Peas
« on: January 16, 2012, 06:55:02 PM »
An email I recieved. (I don't know if it is true) ear

History of the Black Eyed Pea Tradition
[font=century                                 gothic]      "The Real Story is much more interesting and has gone untold in fear that feelings would be hurt. It’s a story of war, the most brutal and bloody war, military might and power pushed upon civilians, women, children and elderly. Never seen as a war crime, this was the policy of the greatest nation on earth trying to maintain that status at all costs. An unhealed wound remains in the hearts of some people of the southern states even today; on the other hand, the policy of slavery has been an open wound that has also been slow to heal but is okay to talk about.

The story of THE BLACK EYED PEA being considered good luck relates directly back to Sherman's Bloody March to the Sea in late 1864. It was called The Savannah Campaign and was lead by Major General William T. Sherman. The Civil War campaign began on 11/15/64 when Sherman 's troops marched from the captured city of Atlanta, Georgia, and ended at the port of Savannah on 12/22/1864.

When the smoke cleared, the southerners who had survived the onslaught came out of hiding. They found that the blue belly aggressors that had looted and stolen everything of value and everything you could eat including all livestock, death and destruction were everywhere. While in hiding, few had enough to eat, and starvation was now upon the survivors.

There was no international aid, no Red Cross meal trucks. The Northern army had taken everything they could carry and eaten everything they could eat. But they couldn’t take it all. The devastated people of the south found for some unknown reason that Sherman ’s bloodthirsty troops had left silos full of black eyed peas.

At the time in the north, the lowly black eyed pea was only used to feed stock. The northern troops saw it as the thing of least value. Taking grain for their horses and livestock and other crops to feed themselves, they just couldn’t take everything. So they left the black eyed peas in great quantities assuming it would be of no use to the survivors, since all the livestock it could feed had either been taken or eaten.

Southerners awoke to face a new year in this devastation and were facing massive starvation if not for the good luck of having the black eyed peas to eat. From New Years Day 1866 forward, the tradition grew to eat black eyed peas on New Year’s Day for good luck."

Good story blind ear. I used to hate black eyed peas as a child. They were always out of  a tin can. Not to many years ago I had some that were cooked fresh from a garden. I have been growing them ever since. Not to bad for cow food.

Ok.....so what do black eyed peas taste like?  I don't know if I've ever seen them.  I do understand though how something that some may turn their nose up at can be considered real tasty by those who have an emotional attachment to such fare.

For me it would be stewed (thickened) tomatoes over boiled and buttered  potatoes.  One of my absolute favorite meals.

My mother uses "crowder peas" interchangably with "black eyed peas" and while they are very similar they are not the same.  Basically they are a dry pea that are best boiled and seasoned with bacon grease.  I really cannot describe the taste, but I do enjoy them.

Yep!
Every New Year`s Eve I get a pot of blackeye peas soaking and the next morning I put them in my Dutch oven or crockpot well seasoned and just a little bit of brown sugar and water. If you got some white wine throw a cup of that in there with just enoughwaterover the peas. Add a hamhock or pork neckbones and cook real slow until done. Make some cornbread and mix with your peas and add a little sweet pickle juice to the mix and "Put some south in yor mouth"!! also goes good with a good salsa or chow chow!!

Well Longwinter, ain't none of these southern boys gonna tell ya, but them peas ain't peas at all. They're beans, little white beans with a black spot where they hook up to the pod. And they taste like BEANS.

Next time we make Baked Beans I'm going to throw some of them Black Eyed Peas in and see how they get along with the Boston Baked Bean Recipe.

I'm betting it will be a good mix, as long as they don't taste too much like a Chick Pea.

How come no one is mentioning hot peppers with the peas? With the ham hock and cornbread you gotta put a cayenne pepper in the bowl and a little pepper juice. You Jawja boys are slippin' a little.
Longwinter, the slaves brought them over from Africa. You either cook them fresh out of the garden as shelled beans or dry them and cook them later. I don't know how to describe the taste, maybe a tiny, starchy, pinto with a little bit thicker skin. In the South it is traditional to have hog jowels, turnip greens and black eyed peas on New Years Day they represent healthy, wealthy and wise. Or if you are a city person health, prosperity and progress.

Sorry guys.  I'm half German and half Dane.  Born in Michigan on a small dairy farm. Now livin in the U.P with Finns, Italians and French Canadians.  I never got no learnin about the fine art of southern cuisine....

Being raised on a farm we didn't mess with our lawn...mowed it once every two weeks whether it needed it or not as there were more important things to do, like make a living.  Always had a good crop of dandy lions in the front yard and a lady from up the road (my grandpa always said they were Communists-and he was right actually) would come and ask if she could dig some dandy lions up.  He'd just chuckle and say "go ahead".  My grandma would watch her and finally after several years figured she would dig some up and see what they tasted like.  I got invited over to a big mess of greens and homemade bread.  To me they tasted like spinach and while I doubt I'd go dig up enough to cook up and eat they weren't bad.

So....Atlaw, I do have a very small clue as to dandy lion greens  :) .  Course now hog jowles thats a different matter.  Don't know as I've ever seen them in a store next to the pigs feet or any where else.
