Sportster 17mach2 Shorty Project
« on: January 17, 2012, 04:44:28 AM »

Hi, guys. Newbie here. I have visited this site many times in the past to gain wisdom, but thought it might be time to actually contribute.

I have my own modest website here <http://michaelreed.info/guns.html>. I just added a series of pictures of my NEF Sportster in 17HM2 with a shortened barrel and wood laminate stocks. Comments welcome.

For those who care, this is what I did. I thought the original 22" barrel was just too long and ungainly. One internet site (Bulberry?) claimed that 16-17" was about optimum for this caliber, and after seeing others on this forum had done it, I decided to shorten the barrel. My local gunsmith quoted $80 to do the job, which is more than a new barrel costs, so I decided to do the work myself. I figured if I screwed up, I could just buy a new barrel.

First, I removed the barrel from the receiver and used two c-clamps buffered by some mail order catalogs to attach it to the wood steps at the back of my house. (I don't have a proper work bench.)

Second, I used to pipe hangars (I think they're called) to help guide the cut. Then I used a simple hacksaw to remove 5.5" off the barrel.

Third, I used a hand file to clean up most of the resulting ugly cut.

Fourth, I wanted to use my Dremel to fine tune / polish the muzzle, but the 17 caliber hole is too small for the Dremel's attachment screw. So, I used a power drill with the largest bit I had on hand to counter sink the bore. A poor man's target crown, I guess.

Fifth, with the bore now widened enough to fit the Dremel head against, I used the flat of a cutting wheel and then a stone to fine polish the muzzle.

End effect looks pretty professional, I think.

Results: Despite the gunsmith's warning, the rifle's accuracy has not suffered. It may actually have improved. Handiness and balance have definitely improved.

I'm still learning and experimenting with the shooting arts. Thanks for the insights that have been shared here.

That is waaaay cool.  I think you just gave me a twisted idea for the weekend.  I may just have to try that for myself...  I have always thought the my HM2 was too heavy and long.

Conversation with Hornady....17hmr and 22mag.   Optimun length 18" with tight chamber...19" if you don't know...achieves posted velocity.

gendoc, thats a fine looking and "Handy" Handi. Has your luck been good using a .17 Mach 2 for coyotes? I have used my Sportster in .22 Mag and have wanted to use my .17 HMR but did not consider my .17 Mach2. If the .17 Mach2 has worked for you did you use 17 grain bullets or the 20 grain bullets and which do you think might be better? Any thoughts on max distance for the .17 Mach2 on coyotes and preferred shot placement?...Thanks for your insight....<><....:)

Thanks buddy, I may just do that. We all know the .17 Mach2 is sure accurate enough at 100 yards to put that little bullet anywhere you want....<><....:)

Thats one way to lighten up these barrels

I had my .17 hmr out today for the first time in a few months and it felt like i was carrying a boat anchor compared to my shortned 20 gauge handi.

I have youth synthetic stocks on mine with a 3-9 variable scope and the total weight must be atleast 8lbs maybe even more, it felt like 20 lbs after I carried it for 4 hours. It shoots great but is very nose heavy and i was thinking of cutting the barrel down to 17-18" range. From the looks of the bullberry site nothing is really lost until you go below around 17".

If i could shave 1 lb off it by cutting 4-5" off it that would porbably make the world of difference and greatly improve the balance.

I turned mine into a shorty as well...it's now 17".  I took it out and shot it yesterday on paper and accurracy is just as good.  I always thought that it was just a little too much with the 22" barrel, but now it's super-handi!

Hi, guys! I haven't been back since my original post. Appreciate all the comments. Here are a few replies.

The butt stock is indeed a Boyd's. They recently came out with a line of reasonably priced models. The forearm came from Numrich Gun Parts. They do not match exactly, but close enough for me.

I can't find the original post, but I once found a site that did some experimentation, claiming that 16" was about right for the Mach2. I think Bulberry and others have found a slightly longer barrel is best for the HMR.

For now, I have confined my field shooting to birds (starlings and crows). I had not thought a Mach2 potent enough to take on coyotes, but hey, what do I know?

Unless I'm mistaken, the Mach2 only comes in 17 grain versions. The Aguila 17 uses a 20 grain bullet, as do some of the HMR loads, last I checked.

I found a good deal on Eley at CTD and bought a brick, but have been having inconsistent results with it. Tried the Hornady red tips instead and had 3 bull eyes in a row at 100 yards. That's the kind of accuracy I was looking for! Sniping crows should be lots easier now.

I too thought the gun in its original form has too heavy overall, especially too nose heavy, hence this project. Shortening it really improved the balance, I think.

I would have posted my pictures here, but I didn't know how. Sorry.

I like what others have done with theirs. Makes me feel like I did something right!

Oh, one fellow asked about the pipe hangars (at least, that is what I think they are called. I'm not really very tools knowledgeable.) They are a kind of clamp I found one day while browsing the hardware store. Come in different sizes and are relatively cheap. Got two to help guide my original cut. Worked pretty well, even though that's not what they were intended for.

Again, thanks for the replies.

See How to Post Pics in the FAQs and Help sticky or any classified forum, we'd like to see some pics, please!!

FYI, Boyd's t-hole stocks have been available for about 5yrs, bought my first one on ebay from a Boyd's dealer in 2007, Boyd's has had them in their seconds and over runs, seconds which I can't for the life of me see why they call em seconds have sold for as little as $42 finished plus shipping from Boyd's! They're usually $50-$70 lately.  ;)

Hornady offers 15.5gr 17M2 ammo.

Quite a long time ago I posted about shooting .17 Aquila (20 grain) in my .17 Mach2 (17 grain). I was not the first to do it and somewhere on the web there is a long article about it being done as a test and the accuracy results.
My much reduced testing showed it to be perfectly fine with great accuracy results. I think the heavier and slower bullets in the .17 Aquila are very well suited to shooting vermin. I still have a bunch of the .17 Aqula left for just that purpose. It is fine to shoot the .17 Aquila in your .17 Mach2 so if you come across some cheap I suggest you snap it up. But then again if you comae across ANY ammo you or a friend shoots which is cheap, BUY IT!!!....<><.... :)

Go to this site for an article RE: the .17 Aquila/.17 Mach2 substitution:

Jeese's Hunting had a great article on the shooting the 17 Aguila in 17M2 rifles, site is down for maintenance now tho.

Tim

You can shoot the 17Aguila in a 17M2 chamber, whether it will cycle the action, I dunno.

Agree regarding 17 Aguila. Local store had a few boxes in stock and I bought one to test. Worked fine. Still, so far my rifle prefers Hornady red tips.

Hey, gendoc. I was just looking over your shorty again and I noticed your scope rail looks a bit short. Did you cut it down too, as well as the barrel? Speaking of barrels, yours looks a might shorter than mine, which is 16.5". Don't let ATF see it.

There are a bunch of scope rails for H&Rs, all are shown in the FAQs, the Numrich rail is only about 3" long, but that doesn't preclude cutting one down, I've done several that look just like Doc's, plus milled them so they're not just shorter with no overhang, but also lower for a perfect cheek weld.  ;)

The only pic unclemike has posted is in reply #18.

No Aguila ammo around here that I've ever seen, they've never even heard of it.  :-\ We don't have huntable tree squirrels here any way, so 17M2 ammo works fine for me.  ;)

Shot both the Aguila and Hornady Mach 2 this weekend.  It was DANG cold, so I dont know how much faith I'm putting in the group sizes, but even then they were pretty solid.

Interesting thing was that the Aguila did not fireform to the M2 chamber.  I will post pictures tonight - at work now- but there is a pretty noticeable difference in the case design.  Now for the kicker- the Aguila shot better groups every time.  It is also a 'solid' type bullet going slower which should help if you are shooting for food.

Both ammo types shot into .75 or so at 50 yards. Each also had 3 or 4 touching when a flyer blew the group.

When the weather is a little better I am going to do a better comparison, and then buy a couple of bricks of what it likes best.

I have been conserned it will be discontinued for some time now. SO for that past year I buy two boxes every time I go into a store that sells it! ;). Now I have a couple bricks of CCI and almost 50 boxes of Hornady. ::) I think I am good...

Im gonna do the same for 17HMR now, as I took inventory last week, looking for 22Mag and discovered my HMR is lacking. Only a half doz boxes and no two are alike! My notes say Hornady shoots best so... I'll buy that! I like the 20g Hornady for hunting edible game or coyotes and the CCI/Hornady 17g for vermin.

I have not seen any different weight bullets offered for the lil M2, has anyone else?
