Moccasins
« on: January 17, 2012, 08:00:00 AM »
I'm a barefoot runner, I use 5 fingers just to keep from cutting up my soles on sharp edges; have been for 2 years now and regular shoes are no longer comfortable. That's okay, I like that my back, hips, knees and achilles tendons don't hurt anymore.

So I'm thinking a pair of moccasins might be just the thing for wearing in the woods. But I'm not wanting the tourist minnetonka style they sell on the res. Does anyone here know of a place that makes quality, custom fit, durable moccasins? And beyond that, any pointers on how to make it myself?

I presently make knives, and will be moving from kydex holsters to leather this year.

Thanks, Chaps

I think Tandy has some patterns...  :-\   I'd thought of trying the knee height moc boots but I'd have to make them so I could use sole inserts!  Then I be GELLIN"!   ;D

HA! No, I've not taken any action on the moccasins yet. But its on the to do list when I get home. It is a might breezy in fact - went out for a FOD walkdown today, and we had 30 knot winds. I'll have to start the planning process and get y'alls advice on leather.

We made them as a boy scout project. Easy pattern, cut, punch, stitch.Much info available. The knee high boots look cool,But they are HOTon the leg.Sold mine @yard sale.Cabela's makes a semi-premium pair, but, geared for relaxing, not running.

Oh yeah, you can waterproof them with mink oil.Bear grease was the real stuff, but we weren't quite up to the bruins yet.Happy to report some of us made it to the real bear fat stage.Don't make your mocs to tight, most will shrink a little after a good soaking.
