anyone have a 204 ruger encore barrel ????
« on: January 17, 2012, 11:25:08 AM »
I'm thinking about getting one for my encore for coyotes and groundhogs. I was wandering which of the 2 avaliable barrels would you choose. The 26" bull barrel or the 28" prohunter barrel.

If anyone has one what kind of accuracy do you get from it.

Thanks
jake

I have the 26" barrel and love it. With factory Federal loads with the Sierra 39 gr BK's i can get 1" groups at 100 all day. Once I run through the last box I'll start working up a hand load for it. No recoil so you can watch the bullet impact.

The proper terminology for the 26 inch factory barrel is "heavy" and not "bull."  That's the length I would go with; either that or the 24 inch tapered barrel.

As for a 2 inch Pro Hunter barrel; that's too short and the flutes would be real tiny. :D

I have a 23 inch bull barrel (yes, that's what it is in the Contender) for my Contender and the cartridge has proven to be deadly on crows, groundhogs, raccoons, coyote and deer.  To date, the longest shot I've taken with it was a 311 yard shot from my front door on a crow if that tells you anything about accuracy.
