17 HMR Accuracy
« on: January 18, 2012, 02:58:29 PM »
Hi.

I just got a 23" barrel in 17HMR.  I was wondering what sort of accuracy I should expect from this cartridge.  What are your experiences?

I find that mine is boringly accurate when shooting paper. Rotten apples, cans of cheap soda or bottles full of water are a blast! I can't wait for sagerats to come out now that I moved home east of the cascades.

I shoot my s16 using a bi-pod. It drills tiny holes in anything. Drops below aim at about 80 yards.

I found that mine had a preference for the Hornady over the CCI ammo.  Same weight bullet, 17gr., but the groups were larger with the CCI so you might want to do a comparision before buying multiple boxes.

Question would probably get more responses in the TC rifle forum, but I'll respond my op for the carbine/rifle lengths you asked about.

Depends on who made the 17HMR barrel, what length and finding the ammo (& lot number) it likes the best.   That done, and all else being equal (trigger jockey's, conditions, etc) factory barrels should easily do sub MOA, maybe even 1/2 MOA or less.   Some custom TC barrels will shoot in the 1's and 2's all day long with their preferred ammo, and all of them easily sub 1/2 MOA.
On the Contender the optimum bull barrel lengths were established early on by Fred at Bullberry to be 19"-21", taking into account velocity and accuracy/barrel harmonics.   Pretty much the same with the 17HM2 barrels as well.

Two of the three Hummers I bought shoot both the Hornady 17gr V-Max and CCI 17gr TNT ammo's so close to the same POI the difference is almost not noticeable - the custom Contender shot in the 1's to mid 2's, the tricked out Marlin in the mid 2's to high 3's (when I hadn't guzzled too much coffee).   ;)

Regardless, the 17HMR is an inherently accurate cartridge that can make even first time shooters marksmen.

My factory TC 23" HMR barrel will easily keep all shots in 1/2" @ 100 yards if there's no wind. That's even considering the crappy scope I had on it. Mine also preferred the Hornady 17 gr Vmax load over the other brands I tried.

I have a 6X18 scope on mine, and with a good rest, a nice day, and the right ammo, I can shoot the heads off of dandelions at 100 yards.
I have had several 3 shot groups at 100 yards that I could cover with a dime.
So good luck, and enjoy.
It is a very fun and accurate caliber.
I carry a single shot.
'cause it only takes one shot.

The wind (even in North Dakota) has to at least stop to change directions doesn't it?

I used to fly to Cheyenne, Billings, Casper, Rapid City, Bismark (and into Canada) on business quite often for about 10 years.   Called those flights "puddle jumpers" as they were usually smaller planes because they often made a stop or two along the way.   My comment about that part of the country was always that the only way the wind would stop raging horizonally there was if the earth stopped rotating on its axis.    Crash landed once in Casper (another time in Butte) because of windshear.   Anyway, why I was yanking Chris' chain.   I've hunted predators and digger varmints in all of those areas/states, including with my hotter wildcat 17's a couple of times, but most often the 24, 25, 26 (and rarely 22) calibers got the nod.   Can't imagine doing it there with a 17HMR though, at least not on a NORMAL day there.   ;)

I think there have been 3, non-consecutive minutes so far with no wind since we've moved here.

 ;D

Actually some days the air is barely stirring, like under 10 mph. Those are the days that the locals seem to walk a bit odd...

I have a 6.5x284, 243, 22-250 for p-dogs and a 223 for predators. I was using the 223 in AZ, but I'm seriously considering retiring it (or rebarreling it to 6x47), and using my 257 AI fwt 70 for predators up here. I still have close to 3 full boxes of the great but discontinued Berger 110 gr MEF's that should buck the wind real well. I'm looking forwards to getting out the big bench guns and harassing p-dogs this summer.

A "17" and heavy wind would certainly be problematic!!!

The sure way to stop wind is to buy and errect a wind powered generator hooked to the grid by way of a meter!

............ at least that's the way my luck opperates!!!

Original Contender , 23" TC barrel.....my best group ever.....1/4", 3 shot at 100yds.
Shoots better without bi-pod.

I'm have only had my 17HMR 23" heavy barrel T/C for 4-5yrs. But this little cartridge really amazes me. Super accurate and fairly quite. Have made a few long range head shots on small game that have amazed even myself.

I have a 4x-12x Burris Mini target scope on top with fine crosshairs. Mine shoots best with Hornady ammo.

I set on my back porch using the railing for a rest and shoot destuctive gray squirrel in my neighbors sugar woods. They eat up his plastic tubing. Very costly for him. Now with the leaves off shots are usually 50-175yrds. Great practice for me and a cost & time savings for him. A win - win situation for both of us.
