Ind. unveils its 1st license plate for gay youth

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana's first specialty license plate that benefits gay causes is now available for purchase.
The Bureau of Motor Vehicles says the Indiana Youth Group plate has been available since Dec. 28. The plate bears a logo with hands in rainbow colors reaching up out of a circle.
Some $25 from sales of each $40 plate goes to the group serving lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.
Youth Group Director Mary Byrne tells The Indianapolis Star (http://indy.st/zl90uE ) that Indiana is the second state in the nation with a specialty plate benefiting gay youths. She says Maryland was the first.
The Youth Group sued the state in 2010 after the BMV twice turned down its request for a specialty plate. Both sides later reached an agreement and the plate was approved.

I was hoping when I read the title to your thread that sex offenders had to have a certain license plate so all people knew who to stay away from and for police to keep a better eye on them. Now tell me that would not be a great plate! Dale

The problem as I see it is that this is for minors. The suit would have to be filed by an adult.
Now, I may be wrong, but, I just don't see a parent starting a youth group for their children.
Who is pushing this training camp? I know what they teach in the Boy Scouts---what skills and techniques are taught in this group?

Ohio considered a special plate for sex offenders but it didnt go anywhere. As usual the rights of the criminal are held in higher regard than the rights of the public at large.

Thats exactly what I dont understand about gays. If someone wants to be gay then fine its really none of my business but why do I have to see it flaunted everytime I turn around or turn on the TV or hear it when I turn on the radio? I dont go prancing around yelling about being a heterosexual every minute of the day. Their personal lives should be exactly that-personal and not a public affair.

I'll tell you what I am for-its a pretty simple concept: "your business is your business and my business is mine." I'll tell you what I am against-you trying to make your business my business. I am also against "compartmentalizing" history so to speak. Why do we need gay history taught in schools? Why cant we just teach history? Lets say Dr. X cures cancer. If Dr. X were gay it would be noted in the history books. If Dr. X were heterosexual no mention would be made of his/her sexual orientation. What does sexual orientation have to do with curing cancer and why should it even be mentioned one way or the other?

What does sexual orientation have to with anything for that matter unless you are talking about it with your significant other?

Really? Surprisingly smart move on part of Ohio legislators. It would be a very, very stoopid thing to do. Clearly, they're smarter than the 'no sharia' jokers in OK legislature... .

Maybe we should require special plates for the cars of gun owners... or maybe for Jewish people?

And just to let the air out of your "clever" little analogy. Its not illegal to be gay or a gun owner or a jew or a muslim...however in most places it is illegal to be a sex offender. So go ahead and go back to the drawing boards and get back to me.

I'm aware of that (though we do have some citizens who consider Muslims to be The Enemy).
Back to you post: I understood your position to be that someone convicted of a crime should have some kind of scarlet letter on their auto lic plate, identifying to them to the public - was that not your meaning? And that the right of the public is being short-changed, if convicts are not so identified?

In Ohio habitual DUI offenders are required to display a special liscense plate. Note:HABITUAL OFFENDERS. You dont get one on the first pop. I suspect it would have been the same with the sex offender plate. Wouldnt it be nice to know that the guy in the van hanging out by your little girl's school without reason is a repeat pedophile? Or are you going to argue that a repeat pedophile who has no kids in the school has just as much right to hang out in front of the elementary school as anyone else does?

Oh and nice try on the attempt to turn this into a muslim rights issue.
