44 mag Handi rifle needs to hunt some hogs
« on: January 18, 2012, 05:25:36 PM »
Don't know why I haven't took this rifle out yet. I have it sighted one inch high at 50 yards with a cast semiwadcutter pushed hard with IMR 4227. It is scoped with a 1.5 x 4.5 Bushnell Banner and the barrel has been cut to 17.5 inches. This gun could be called a tack driver with this load and now that I bring it up it is going behind the seat of my truck in the morning. I have feeders running on a place 40 miles south and NO excuse not to go out and shoot a hog. One question, is penetration pretty good with a 250 gr. Keith style SWC at 1700 fps?

Sounds like good hog medicine.
an unloaded wepon is equal to the same mass and volume as a rock.

I have used that lead slug out of my Ruger SRH 7.5" at about 1300 fps and it goes through both shoulders of hogs up to 125 lbs at 50 yds or less.....  I haven't tried it further or on really big hogs but it knocks the snot out of the eating size piggies.  ;)

It was nice and clear till around 12am, then a huge fogbank rolled in and I couldn't see the ground from my platform stand. I went back to the truck and could hear pigs at another feeder across a creek but figured it would be no use sneaking up on them in the fog as visibility was only 10 feet or so. Maybe next time.
