38 special loads, pb wad cutter and jhc
« on: January 19, 2004, 02:11:07 PM »
Just got two new beauties at gun show and need to work up loads.

Beauty #1:  S & W Model 15 (1966) NIB!  This will be my dresser drawer gun and am looking for a load using 158 gr JHC.

Beauty #2:  S & W Model 14, 8-5/8 barrel GET THIS:  It is blue with nickel cylinder and barrel!  This will be seeing 148 gr lead double ended wad cutters for bullseye targets

I am looking for powder and load suggestions for accurate loads...of course I will check with a few load books, and proceed with caution.  Just looking for an experienced recomendation.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for any help.........................The 14 wadcutter load first...a  2.7-2.8 gr. Bullseye and 148 wadcutter....hollowbase most accurate for most guns.......and for the 15....FACTORY 158 lead hollow points in a standard or +p loading.....Rem or Fed....for serious use.......just to avoid the POSSIBLE legal problems ........as for a pratice duplicate loading of 158's to match the factory ammo 4.5 of Unique.........or 4.0 of bullseye..........get a good lead solvent and brush for cleaning as the lead bullets will lead the barrel and forcing cone......a Lewis Lead remover kit works great for the forcing cone cleaning.........good luck and good shooting!!!

bigdaddytacp,

Are you  using lead in the Modle 15 rather than jacketed for a particular reason?

I was hoping to use Jacket hollow cavity (already have 1k).  No reason not to is there?

Thanks for your help, I have these powders and will be tinkering tonight for the 15.

Thanks again,

Fred

..............I prefer the softer lead 158's in the 38special over the 158jacketed due to the lower velocity and performance of the 38special with the 158's......several studies have found the 158softer lead hollow point to be very effective aganist soft targets.......in the 38special I prefer 125 jacketed hollow points over the 158's for soft target use.......BUT there is no reason not to use them and shoot them ......but for "serious" protection use I just prefer the other bullets and they tend to have less "over penetration" chances.......hth...good luck and good shooting......hopefully at fun targets only!!!
