With the rising population of our world people are starving and it would seem that we will run out of resources to feed our ever growing population. Do you think at some point the population of the world will need to be controlled? I myself don't really like the idea of a government being able to tell me how many children I can have but on the other hand I feel that some day soon something will have to be done. Dale

China has tried that, look at all the bad press and refusal to go along with the program.    China knows at some point, already there in some areas, they are not going to be able to feed everyone.  But world wide they are condemned for trying to limit family growth.  People would rather starve than be told what to do by government.

That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Do I believe the population could reach a figure so high there is mass starvation? Yes. The situation will be a matter of location though... as it already is, witness the African continent, witness North Korea. Those who could do something about those places and their problems are choosing to let nature take its course.  So in the end I would say that the control measures are already taking place. Otherwise I don't believe so.

People are already taking population into consideration in the more industrialized countries.  Many European countries have negative birth rates (2.2ish per female = 0) and I believe the US is in the same area if you adjust for immigration.  The poorer countries are the places where there is the least education, the least equality for women, and the least access to birth control.  Time will eventually improve all of those things.  There is a carrying capacity for this planet, and for the isolated populations within it.  Anybody catch the National Geographic piece on Brazil's dramatic decline in birth rate?

I think it happens naturally. Much of the world is in a perpetual state of semi starvation, and it has been like that for so long that it is more a natural state for humanity than the kind of diet we have here in the US.

So it may make sense to re-frame the question as the dangerous increase in over-eating in the developed West and how that habit has spread to endanger much of Asia.

In early Mother Earth News magazines some studies quoted said that any biological system that reaches 85% of capacity will die back to 50% or less due to some diisaster such as plague, earthquake etc. Not just disease, anything can happen. It can be an experimental set up or a natural occureing system and it will get knocked back from 85% to 50% consisstantly often by unexpecred occurances. I have no refrences I just remember reading the articles. ear

ear:  You may have something.  Look at all the pending disasters on the horizon.
1.  That volcano on the east coast of Africa, that when it goes it is supposed to creat a sunami that will complete cover Florida, Lousianna, and most of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, S. Carolina, and half of Texas.
2.  The new Madrid Fault, that has the potential to wipe out Chicago, St, Louis, Memphis, New Orleans, and everything along the Mississippi.
3.  Mt Rainier, Yellowstone, or any of the major Volcano's along the ring of fire should have a major eruption.  A new Ice Age could be started instantly.  If one whole year with no growing season were to happen, Earth's population would be depleted to small pockets around the world.  Doubt the industrialized nations would survive.  It was not all that long ago that we had the year with no summer, Early 1800s, famine occured here in North America and through out Europe.

The one child policy was pushed by China due to the country's famine, which in turn was partially caused by the failed agricultural policies of the Cultural Revolution.  The introduction of the ultra sound machine and abortion led to the current male- female imbalance of 120 to 100.  I feel this in turn will lead to problems in the world when those males come of military age.

duk - Your correct, about the zero growth rates.  But a major problem is the population growth rate in those poorer countries, and among the muslim populations worldwide, including in the US and Europe.

Don't worry about it. Leave it in the hands of our Creator. We are his creation and he created the earth and all its creatures. I am sure he has a master plan for us. the bottom line is to pray and have faith in HIM.

The Creator also gave "man" free will and has allowed things to get completely out of hand, several billion people ago.  The prime poopulation problem is lack of parental responsibility; too many poople having kids they can't afford.  I'm for mass spaying and nuetering.

I don't believe in free will but I know if you crowd animals too much they die off.  It will happen.

In my small world here in Pa., the only ones who hasn`t cut down on having big families are the Amish!! With an average of 10-12 Kids per Household they have slowly taken over the area. Most are decent hard working People. But, for the life of Me I can`t figure out how they make enough Money to feed themselves?? God bless `em....

Happens with animals all the time. Rabbits get overpopulated, fox and 'yotes get healthy. Happens with the fish. Numbers go up and down all the time. It is catching up to the human species in limited area's, Africa,N.Korea,India and the like. It'll happen in this country, just ask Obama. He's trying to cut down on our population as we speak. gypsyman
