While Newt is not my choice, I have some problems with his Ex wife's discription.
An open marriage is where both members are free to go and do what ever. Both are able to go out and have affairs. What she explained is that Newt just wanted her to allow him to have an affair, and for her to just share him between her and his mistress. This is not an Open Marriage. Plus MaryAnn was a mistress whilt Newt was married to his first wife Jackie. This is nothing but Sour Grapes. Newt has already said he has asked for forgiveness and he feels he has been forgiven. So this is in the past. Nuf Said.
But, so what. Many men and women both quietly have affairs, and no one ever hears about it, or knows about it, or cares. Many Presidents have had affairs while in office. It did not affect their ability to be president. Moral Standards is something every one has to set for themselves. While you may want others to accept your standards, you can not force or expect every one to look at morality the same way you do.
One of the most miserable times I remember about my childhood was when My Mother loaded all us kids (three) up in the 1955 Ford, so she could drive my Aunt Annie around, following Annie's husband. They just knew he was having an affair. They caught him, and Annie and him got a divorce. Then Annie convinced my Mom that my Dad was also having an affair(missery loves company). So here we go again, following my Father around on his route, thinking he was having an affair. After several weeks she gave up. Not that she was convinced he was not having an affair, but that she just would not be able to catch him.
When Dad was in his mid 70s he came up to Alaska to visit and go hunting. I told him about Mom loading us up to follow him around. Dad laughed, he said one night Annie had insinuated he was doing the same as Ed, so he was expecting them to feel he was doing the same as Ed. So when Mom started following him around, he was expecting it and saw the car right off. So he did things to make it hard for Mom to follow him. He would change his route around every week and not make the same stops every week in the same order.
Then one day Dad set her up. Knowing Mom is a very aggressive woman, he met his Grandma at Walgreens lunch counter for lunch. Grandma Simpson was in on it and kept herself sort of hidden so she would not be recognized. As Dad sat down he leaned over and gave Grandma a kiss. I'll never forget Mom calling that woman names, and flying out of that car. Slamming the door so hard she knocked the window off it's tracks. Into Walgreens she went. When she came back out she was quite, Mad as all getout, but quite. Soon after that she quite following Dad around. Dad told me he never had time to have an affair, plus he knew Mom would have shot him if she ever found out he was messing around.
