45-70 data

Where does the Encore fit, in the reloading data for the 45-70? Will it handle loads for the Ruger #1 and mauser? Is it more in line with pressures ment for the 86 Winchester and other levers? I do not intend to magnumize this one but I am interested in how much strength the action has, as compared to others like the Ruger. Shotgunner

You should not doubt the sturdiness of the encore frame, but according to the folks at T/C their factory barrel 45/70 is not recommended to shoot ruger#1 loads.  Although I'm sure there are those who believe this not to be the case, just thought I'd pass this info on as it was told to me by aT/C tech.

I have a 8lb can of H322 and several lbs of IMR 4198. Does anyone have any suggestions? I thought I would try the 300 grain Hornady bullet as well as the Speer 400. I have a mold for a 360 grain cast bullet. I will try them myself as soon as the barrel gets here. I have the Williams peep sight. I have the brass, bullets, primers and powder. The barrel should be here this week. I am biding my time by getting ready, sizing and priming cases. Perhaps someone can help out. Shotgunner

I've been shooting top loads in mine for several years with no problems. I personally load with H-322 and Winchester mag primers with excellent results.   KN

The barrel should be here tomorrow. I have a Wialliams sight waiting and a bunch of brass sized and primed. I'll start with what I have and go from there. I will try a few "heavy" loads but knowing my dislike of recoil will probably find something moderate. Even as big as some of the PA black bears are growing( 4 or 5 this year over 700 lbs ) I will have more than I need. I will report on what I find. Shotgunner

I recently had problems with my 45-70 (back in Nov.) After speaking to T/C(Dave in the tech shop) about different loads he adived me that the T/C 45-70 wasn't recommended to fire ruger #1 and that the hotter the load the lower the zero would be(the opposite inwhich you would think).

I would never go over the 45-70 loads for Marlin lever actions in a Encore.  The No.1 has alot thicker chamber walls and the drop block can handle a lot more presure than the Encore break open action.

Fireweed, That is correct. The faster you push a bullet the lower it will print. Two reasons account fot this. Less time in the barrel means less rise before it exits. And also a faster projectile will have less arc to it at a given distance.   KN

I'm surprised that the Encore is questionable in utilizing the stronger loads around.  I have  Marlin .45-70 and have thought about trying some Garrett ammo.

Is this stuff to 'hot' for the Encore ?

I have been shooting the 45-70 when the weather permits. It is accurate with a 380 cast bullet and IMR 4198. I notice that with H322 I get a lot of unburned powder in the bore. The gun does kick. I wish the 26" barrel had iron sights. I am happy with the williams peep sight, with the light 24" barrel it makes a handy rig. I won the bid on a 300 grain mold on e-bay this week, paid a little too much, and will try it soon. I wanted a flat point bullet because I am now thinking of adding a lever action. Has anyone shot the Marlin cowboy? I have been using tissue paper as a filler, it seems to work but I think I should go to the polyester stuffing. Any comments on filler? Shotgunner
