Shipping Charges
« on: January 19, 2012, 07:00:31 PM »
Not sure where the best to place to discuss this is, so here goes...

I recently ordered reloading equipment from a reputable online dealer. In their checkout process, the shipping cost is automatically generated with UPS as the default. I didn't like the price of $13+ for just a set of dies, so I found where I could select USPS for $9.90. Figuring this was for shipping and handling, I agreed to the purchase terms.

Today I received the dies in a small USPS flat-rate box with a computer generated label and delivery confirmation. Normally I wouldn't contest their shipping charges, but the invoice clearly states the $9.90 charge is for shipping. There is no mention whatsoever of handling charges.

Now I full well know it didn't cost them $9.90 to ship that package, even with delivery confirmation. Since there's no mention of any handling charges, should I inquire about the price? I think they may have spent as much as $5.50 and the box was free too.

Thanks, Dinny

I am sure someone had to pull it off the shelf, package it and possibly mail it. I have learned years ago you always loss your shirt in shipping charges ordering small single items.

Midway has always done this and now others are following suit.  It would seem operating costs are no longer included in advertised prices.  Can we say "gouging"?

Sounds to me like maybe they are not as reputable as you think.

Handling charges are a total rip off and likely illegal. Handling the merchandise is an integral part of doing business. If you are in business to sell an item you must handle it. Your price should reflect the cost of doing business and shouldn't be an added line item.

I tend not to do business with companies that try to rip me off.

lets see cut price of goods to get sale bump up handling to make a profit .
I learned to see bottom line on several suppliers before ordering. If the product is out of stock and one other supplier has it really check bottom line pricing.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

This is a trick/scam you see on a lot of EvilBay sales.  :o

A $20 item for $10, shipping and handling $20, for a total of $30 or $10 more dollars profit for the seller.

I just try to make sure it's still a good deal.
If it is, I go ahead.

That being said, I really don't appreciate hidden cost.  >:(

I always look for companies that advertise free shipping.  Recently I called in an order for $100+, but under $125 to SG.  When I asked about free shipping, the customer service rep told me the free shipping was for orders $125, and above.  I promptly cancelled, my entire order, and explained to the rep why I was doing so.  The next day I received an email offer of free shipping from the same company for any order over $30.  I called them back and gave the same order I tried to order the day before.  If I can't get what I need at local stores, or with free shipping, my attitude is that I can wait.

Dinny - I would call the company's customer service department, and try to get the "handling charges" reversed.  Like GB said, handling is part of the transaction, and shouldn't be extra.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

Dont forget the "small order fee". Anything under $25 is a small order and they tack on another $3 dollars which is pure B.S. I stopped ordering from Midway because of it. I dont have to go into Wal Mart or the grocery store or a local gun shop and spend a set amount in order to avoid paying a "small order fee" I would rather buy locally and pay an inflated price than support Midway anymore.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

It was Lee Factory Sales. I have always been told they could charge more than the actual shipping charges as long as the invoice states "shipping and handling". No handling fees have been identified with this invoice. I'm gonna call or email them this weekend to see how they explain this one.

Thanks, Dinny
