45acp questions
« on: January 20, 2012, 04:05:27 AM »
I loaded my first ones the other day and have some questions/concerns.
My load was 5grs of Win231 behind a 180LSWC. Primer was a Win LP.

Some of my loads didn't burn all the powder, which surprised me. I had powder coming out of the cylinders when ejecting the shells.

I didn't think to check if it happened in just one cylinder, but I had a few of the rears of the shells dragging on the frame. I'd checked the case lengths before loading and rechecked them last nite. All are the same length. When they did this I pulled them back out to check the primers to make sure they weren't high. Didn't think until just now that it may have been powder...duh!

I think I crimped them enough, but I'm not totally sure. This taper crimp isn't as easy to check as the roll that I use for the 45LC. I'm gonna be loading some more tonite. Maybe I'll tighten it down a little more. I know on the Colt loads that the crimp can cause funny things to happen. If I didn't have it tight enough, could this have been the culprit causing some of the shells to drag?

All in All, I was pleased with the load. The shots all shot 6'' low and a little left at first. I tweeked the sites some and got them to come up on the target at least.

Thanks in advance,

HWD

I've shot a lot of rounds loaded with W231 and while it's a bit dirty, I've not had a problem with unburnt powder left in the case.  You may be on the right track with needing more crimp.

It's also possible that there is some contaminate in the case.  Maybe from too much bullet lube but I'm only guessing here.  Off the top of my head 5 grains sounds a bit light, check your data and perhaps move toward the middle or upper end of the charge for this bullet.  Maybe a little more pressure will help burn all the powder.

I hope this helps...

Yep, light bullet and light load.  More crimp may help some but bumping up the powder charge will help with the burn. For me, it has never been a problem having a few unconsumed kernels/flakes left behind.

Thanks guys. I bumped the powder and improved my crimp a bit. I also checked to make sure these don't drag on the frame.
After comparing these to one I had left over from the last shoot, I found that my crimp was a little wimpy and lacking. We'll see what happens...

Hunts, Hunts, Hunts! The First Cardinal Rule of Load Develovment!!!!  Change only one (1) thing at a time!!    ::)
It is going to help and you will attest that it was the crimp and we're gonna be swearing it was the powder increase!  LOL   :o
Good Luck with the load.

180gn L-SWC and 5.0gn 231 is not that light a load.

It is the starting load for the bullet, my limited experience with 231, it stays dirty till you get up around the max suggested loads.  Oh, they are probably not unburned, they are just unconsumed ash that will pretty much go away when the pressures increases.

Butler,

I don't usually do more than 1 "fix" at a time but I figured what the hey! If this works, fine. If it don't, we'll advance in a different direction the next go round. 1st chance I get, I'll let ya'll know what happened with my newest recipe.

Thanks again,
HWD
