500 SW on 12 guage receiver
« on: January 20, 2012, 09:31:18 AM »
New to building ouit on this type of platform.

Is it possible to use a 500 SW barrel on a shotgun reciever?

I can purchase NEF/HR used shotguns for under 100 at local pawn.

Would I be better off just buying the rifle in 500 SW in the first place?

Appreciate your input. Thank You!

You would probably kill yourself with a 500 barrel on shotgun fram they are Sb1 frame you need an sb2 for the 500

Peak thrust, maximum thrust at any given instant, is too high. Lots of reading on this site about your question. ear

OK two nays in the first two replies, guess I got my answer. I did see somewhere you can build out .357 and .44 mags on shotgun frames. Maybe see where that will take me.

What is the going reasonable rate for a sb2 reciever that can handle the 500 SW?

I just reviewed the HR website and it looks like it cost about 140.00 to add a 500 SW to a reciever with all the shipping and labor included. Does that sound about right? Add another 100 to 125 to it for the reciever, plus the shipping and transfer fees and am I am right in line with buying a new rifle from a sporting goods store... I guess building them out is not very practical from a cost stand point. Mmmmm thought I might have saved a few bucks. vut don't look that way.

The least costly way to acquire that .500 S&W is to buy a new one.  Not likely to find one used, and you're not likely to buy into an SB2 at a price that makes it feasible to spend that 'nother $150 to put a new barrel on one.
BTW, the SB2 has held up just fine with my 500 loads, including some "bruiser" jacketed 500 gr. bullet loads..
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." I would recommend if you want a 12 gauge and .500s&w to buy a new .500 complete gun that way you have the SB2 receiver and then buy a used 12 gauge barrel here in the classifieds and fit that to the .500's receiver yourself as its easy to do. No safety concerns that way and still a very cost effective way to go as the shotgun barrel will not cost much used on its own.
