OK, I made some...
« on: January 20, 2012, 03:43:34 PM »
.454 Hornady 250gr lead.  Wrapped twice with 8# sketch paper.  Twisted tails.  Dried, clipped tails, lubed with Lee case lube and pushed thru .454 Lee sizer.  They mike just at .454+.  Now what?

Have 2400 and 4227.  22.5gr of 4227 seems to work for 360gr .454 lead GC bullets.  So same load, or increase to lowest 'jacketed' amount [29.5gr for 250gr STP].  Would 2400 be better [say 26.5gr]?  These are both book min loads.

Should I use a dacron tuft filler?

Figure on a light squeeze crimp, not roll.

Will be shooting in a Handi 20" bbl 454 Casull.

It was fun... so far.

Thanks

see no reason for a filler should work fine. just my opinion but i would go easy on the crimp. i shoot pp out of my 45-70 and 38-55 with no crimp at all

As long as the velocity you're looking for is under 2200 fps (harder alloys can be pushed faster) you should be able to treat it just the same as a copper jacketed bullet.  Be careful not to tear up the patch and rub some more lube on the patch before seating and you should be good to go.  Not sure what you're using for bullet lube, I'm not sure case lube is ideal.  I use Paul Matthews formula, 55% Beeswax:45% Vaseline ( or vice versa, I never remember and have to go back to the book) with good results.

I wouldn't think you'll need any crimp for a single shot rifle.  Enjoy shooting a "premium" bullet that you've made yourself!

How big a bullet will a fired case accept by hand seating? That is likely going to be your best size for the finished product. Most likely you aren't going to have to resize the cases or use any dies on them except possibly a taper crimp die - see below.

No need or want to crimp for a single shot rifle. Maybe a slight taper crimp if the bullets want to fall out.

For powder, figure out what is safe with a 100% load to the base of the bullet which is seated to engrave the rifling and use that. (Set it up so the cartridge is seated the last 1/16" by closing the action)If accuracy isn't what you'd like drop the powder a little and add some filler - cream 'o' wheat or BPI shot buffer. No dacron, you want something granular that will seal the bore.

Just running Quickload with this combo it looks like 100%  2400 is safe, as is H110, 296, Lil' Gun, Ramshot Enforcer, AA4100, and many others that should work well in your application. You might see 2100 fps, but likely not much more at full whack. Still a rather potent combination, especially since those bullets are nearly pure lead and will expand violently at that speed.
