Joe Paterno dead.
« on: January 22, 2012, 11:16:06 AM »
Former Penn State Joe Paterno dies at 85-years-old   Former Penn State Joe Paterno dies at 85-years-old  Credit: AP  Former Penn State Joe Paterno dies at 85-years-old   by AP WHAS11.com Posted on January 22, 2012 at 10:30 AM     STATE COLLEGE, Pennsylvania (AP) -- Joe Paterno, who racked up more wins than anyone else in major college football but was fired from Penn State amid a child sex abuse scandal has died. He was 85.
His family released a statement Sunday morning to announce his death.
Paterno's son Scott announced Nov. 18 that his father was being treated for lung cancer, which was diagnosed in mid-November during a follow-up visit for a bronchial illness.
The storied career of "JoePa" included 409 wins in 46 seasons and two national championships.
But his reputation for success with honor was shattered when a former assistant was charged with molesting 10 boys during a 15-year span, including some in the Penn State athletic complex.
Critics said Paterno should have done more to stop it. He was fired Nov. 9.
In all, Paterno guided five teams to unbeaten, untied seasons.

Now, watch all the sportcasters, who just weeks ago couldn't resist jumping on the bandwagon in calling for his head, come out of the woodwork singing his praises in an effort to assuage their feelings of guilt.  Hypocrites.

I know little about the man other than what I've learned in the news last couple months, and I've not paid much attention to that.

Condolences to his family, in this time of his passing.

I ran into him, literally, in a hallway on campus in the early 70's.  After I apologized, he engaged me, a complete unknown, in a short conversation relative to my schoolwork and future plans.  Can you name a single other person of like status who would take the time out of his busy day to do that with a run-of-the-mill underclassman?  And that wasn't an isolated case, but the norm for JoePa.
The man lived his convictions like nobody else.  He was vilified by the media midgets who took jealousy cheap shots at a man whose shoes they were unworthy to tie.  Those cretins, who sanctimoniously ridiculed him for what they judged he should have done, should now be seeking out a rock to crawl under and stew in their shame.

Nobody here judging anybody. He admitted that when told about sandusky that he did NOT report it to the police as he should have, so the abuse went on adding more victims. No judging there simply repeating what HE said. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

I never heard of the man until these allegations came out. I'm just not a college sports fan. I too found it more than a little sickening to see the same people who were dragging him through the mud just weeks ago sing his praises all weekend after he was dead. Media hypocrites. I cant stand any of them.

I've read a lot about this....a whole lot. Even the board that fired him said the flaw they found was that he should have followed up more with the person who investigated after he reported it.

And for those of you who maybe haven't followed too closely, what JoPa saw was the guy coming out of the showers with a kid. He didn't see molestation taking place, but reported it to a school official to investigate. That official determined there was something bad going on, but told no one. Should he have asked more questions? Probably? Would the campus official have just lied to him? Almost definitely (if you're already covering up child molestation, lying to a coach is no big deal).

Kimber. You mistake stating facts as judging, it is not. Facts by Paternos own words. Can't remember the guys name who witnessed sandusky sodomizing a 10 yr old boy in the showers but he reported it to Paterno instead  of the police, big mistake. 2nd was Paterno not reporting it to the police. This was a sick criminal act that should have been reported to the police because crimes against children were being comitted. The university should have been told AFTER the police were called. Paterno said he was confused and didn't know what to do by his own admission, no judging, it's what he said. Consequently the sexual abuse by sandusky continued and added even more victims. I don't see where you can call repeating what he himself admitted to as judging. God has already done that and like I said, I hope he was at peace and had repented before he died because he did a lot of good things in his life too, but on that occasion used poor judgement. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

The guy that reported it to.Joe said no.such.thing.  He saw them come out of the showers in towels. If hes saying different now he's changing his original story.

Paterno didn't see anyone walking out of the shower together. It was Mike McQueary that reported to Paterno that he saw Sandusky and a young boy in the shower together. McQueary stated that Sandusky appeared to be sodomizing the boy. I'm sure he probably told Paterno this. Even if he didn't tell Paterno the sodomizing part. Sandusky and a young boy in the shower together would be plenty enough to set off plenty of bells and whistles.
If Paterno was the guy everyone said he was, and I don't doubt that he was a good man. But what reason does a man of Paterno's stature have for not making sure that an end was put to Sandusky's molestations. Not many reasons why he wouldn't, other than to save his beloved, almighty Penn State football program. I wouldn't even doubt that all the Penn State officials had a huddle and determined not to say anything for fear of the black eye on the program that was surely due to come. My belief is that everyone that knew about this, and kept it hush, hush for the sake of saving a stinking college football program, is just as guilty as Sandusky. Including Sandusky's wife. I'm not going to believe that she didn't have a clue what was going on. Especially when he would have young boys over for sleepovers. I don't care what Paterno did in the past, he was wrong as the day is long, for letting Sandusky continue sodomizing young boys.

This didn't happen in the military. No chain of command in a college, unless your trying to hush something up. He should have went to the local police. Not a dean or administrator, afraid of public outcry. And funds being pulled by benifactors. Like I said earlier, hope he prayed for forgivness. By now, the final judge has passed sentence. And his football record doesn't mean squat! gypsyman

No Sandusky didn't work for Paterno in 02. Sandusky retired from his assistant coaching position in 99. What does that have to do with anything anyway? Sandusky had the run of the campus. He still had emeritus status at the campus.  He even had his own personal set of keys to the locker room. How convenient that must have been. A campus locker room to shower with young boys after hours. I'm sure there are more that knew about Sandusky and his pedophilia. I just hope it all comes out, because they all deserve to be punished.
I'm sure Paterno and the other almighty Penn State officials would have loved to report they had a pedophile as an assistant coach for 30 years. That would have looked good for the "we do nothing wrong, Penn State football program"

Paterno's "legacy" must include the child moletation incident, it is part and parcel of his "Legacy". Reporting it to someone and then washing his hands of it did not absolve him of responsability. A grown man in a shower with a 10 year old boy is sickening. The assistant who saw this and did nothing is a coward and a man of no morals or honor! Rest assured if I ever see a grown man sodomizing a young boy the police will be notified because they would have to be called to keep me from killing the pervert! I would still be in that locker room kicking a lung out of that freak! Job or no job!!

BLUEDOG. My sentiments exactly. We need to move on. A man is dead and I never intended for this to turn into a Joe Paterno bashing thread. I have a link to grand jury testimony that is rather graphic and sickening that I can send if pmed, I don't want to post it here. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

He did report what he knew to his superiors but they halted the investigations. He never witnessed anything, he just reported what he heard. It's funny how some judge others on what they think are facts, when they really have none.

Its something how McQueary wasn't even questioned by anyone other than the AD and the senior vice president. Until he testified in Grand Jury in 2010. All they did was take Sandusky's locker room keys off of him. They sure fixed him. Everyone one of them should be on their knees praying for forgiveness before judgment day arrives. Its unbelievable a football program ran by so called respectable men, took presidence over one of their own molesting pre teen boys.

Kevin, Yes I do. I'll try to make it plainer for you. Sandusky was a coach for PS and Joe Paa  for 30 years. Even after he retired he was still seen as someone important on the Penn State campus. How do you think it would have worked out for the football program if they would have reported Sandusky for sodomizing a 10 year old boy on their campus, in their locker room? Sandusky was not just a guy off the street that had no ties with Penn State. Maybe you have another reason that Paterno, the DA and the assistant vice president for finance didn't report what they knew Sandusky was doing.

No matter what you think of the Sandusky situation, how much of it is based on facts you KNOW to be facts from witnessing them and how much of it is based on what you HEARD from somebody else including the twits that call themselves journalists?  How much of what was supposedly said, from one of those people in question to another, was said in your presence for you to personally hear and KNOW what was said?  How much of those persons' thoughts were audible to you so that you KNOW what they were thinking?  And yet so many people are willing to shoot the lightning bolts of vengeful death at those they THINK are quilty based on what they can only THINK they know that person said, heard, or thought without really KNOWING.  THAT attitude amongst jurers is precisely why so many innocent people have been convicted and put to death.  Tell me, purveyors of vengence and justice; what should be the punishment for the jurers who did THAT?

It was just a warning everyone PM.
I've seen similar discussion elsewhere that have turned ugly.
Just didn't want to see that here.  ;)
