Black powder is just like Dynomite. The more i learn about it the less i know about it.
There are very few probablms that can't be solved with explosives.

This is very sad & it is damaging to our sport.  It's not in the story but somebody screwed up before the accident.
When I got into black powder guns there is the oft repeated story of the kids playing with a real genuine Civil War gun...  I think it may have been a musket.  Back in those days we had cap guns...  The kids put a paper cap in the hammer & pulled the trigger.  Each time they added more caps...  until it discharged a full service load that took out the picture window.  Praise the Lord, no one was in front of it.

A very sad story indeed.  Notice that the story was illustrated with a crew served artillery piece, and the cannon involved in the accident was a 6 inch long piece.  Paints a negative image for the rest of us.

Hmmm.  Adult supervision?  Kids playing with something explosive.

Yeah, no different than any self-inflicted gun shot wound.  Lack of supervision, lack of firearms safety training.

Black Powder is nothing like dynomite. It is much, much safer.

I think that when the cops get to the bottom of this story, they will find that it was the brother who shot him in the face.

Definitely written from a position of anti-gun, and the writer shows a complete lack of knowledge by rushing such an incomplete piece to press.  Lots of facts are missing, and the one mentioned detail about not knowing how a propellant got into the cannon, and the cannon "has no firing mechanism" makes me suspicious of how this will be twisted.

I love the stock photo of a real cannon being associated with a "toy cannon"
hopefully more details will come out....

Somebody put the powder & ball in it, and did something to fire it.  The scale replica cannon didn't fire itself.   Dunno what they were thinking, doing this in the house.  Yes, they.  I suspect both boys were involved.  Probably misfired, kid picks it up, Bang!  Tragic.

I would bet that hairspray, or butane was the fuel, and a cigarette was the ignition.  I could also see a marble being the projectile.

This is of course purely speculation on my part, but somehow I doubt powder and fuse were involved

The picture of the Cannon firing is a prime example of the stupidy and misrepenation of the press.

This is 80 miles down the road from me and have friends in that town.  I need to find out just what happened.

Treat every cannon as a loaded cannon,  and be safe

I must say that last report is how it needs to be done.  Forget sensationalism or painting anyone in a bad light, a kid died and this is why.  The hang fire makes the most sense now.  Sad to say but the kid was alittle too young in my opinion to operate that "toy".

One thing I feel needs to be pointed out is the attitude about the cannon, "He was doing it in the house, so it wasn't anything strong enough to destroy or break anything," Lucille Hertel said. "It was only a 6-inch cannon. ... You wouldn't think it would be able to do anything." The barrel on Dom's .50 cal Dahlgren is just over 6" long overall, about 6 1/16, that can certianly do quite a bit of damage.

More info on "Toy" investigators now say it was a model cannon that could fire a 50 cal. ball with black powder..........

I have a bunch of those little .45 and .50 cal cannons, I also have a .44 cap and ball revolver. Any of those cannon could be loaded heavier than you could possibly load the .44 and easily be deadlier at close range. It's a sad thing for the family but the bottom line is that they are a dangerous item and need to be respected.

As I recall, I got my first .22 rimfire rifle about age 12, along with a lot of safety education.  If this kid was a teenager, he should have had the capacity to understand what he was doing, in spite of the childish treatment given to teenagers in the education industry these days.

look at what I posted about the grandmother's attitude about it, chances are the parents were just as nonchalant.

If I were firing off anything in the house, sure as heck everyone in the house would know.   Where the heck were the parents?

Safety, safety, and more safety.  If one is standing close to the muzzle of a cannon when it goes off,  they can fell the concussion, and it can really effect them.  This is why we have safety rules. This is why we use the best of materials when building a Cannon or Mortar.  Don't ever cut corner's, build it right!

I have heard stories where people are luckly to be alive. Some I have forgotten, some I remember.  I'll start a post on this subject some time soon.

This sort of thing happens all too often.... I have a friend who lost a 15year old stepson in a 4th of July accident..... a fireworks mortar mis-fired before anyone could say anything he had moved to look down the barrel this mistake of curiosity killed him..... case was reviewed by a grandjury considering charging stepfather in accident...... thankfully they did not charge.... he already was mentally paying for it.....
